What's the difference between these 2 heat-shields? There are some subtle shape differences and I believe the top one is made of steel while the other is fiberglass? Does anyone have part numbers for each, please? Thanks!

I don't think they were ever fiberglass from the factory

Ferrino 09-04-2015 03:36 PM

OK, thanks. Should there be a part number stamped on these heat shields?

rsnodgrass 09-04-2015 11:13 PM

Both are metal heat shields. The bottom version was tin snipped at the factory to provide room for routing AC hoses on the rear. This crude modification was done by the factory. I've only seen the tip snip modified heat shields painted black without any texturizing. The other style heat shield is typically body color painted.

Ferrino 09-05-2015 06:13 AM

Thanks rsnodgrass! OK, I see the "tin snip" modification now. I have the unmolested (upper) style and yes it's textured and body-colored.

Has anyone ever figured out if someone has reproduced the wider RSR/IROC style rubber portion of the tail? Seems like it would sell very well.

Who is the vendor that makes the large quantity of rubber replacement items for our cars? Perhaps they might agree to a run...

group911@aol.co 09-28-2015 05:05 PM

The base is completely different between the two tails so unless you have an original tail, the larger rubber us useless.

Oh, I didn't know that. They looked similar at a glance. I guess I will stick with my whale tail.

I am doing a work on a 1977 930. Have been trying to find whale tale for it. Just purchased one but not sure if it is original. The original color is gold and it has been repainted. At the moment can not find any numbers on the piece other than ones one the first picture.

All the help are greatly appreciated.

Something is odd about it. The center bracket has been modified for some reason. Is your 77 a US version? Originally a/c? Your pictures didn't show up but this a link to them http://s1048.photobucket.com/user/ansman74/media/Jaettu/WP_20151007_08_35_01_Pro_zpsmw2ue62t.jpg.html

Car was originally taken to Japan. Whale tail is from a different car as my car has duck tail at the moment. Trying to take the car back to original shape with original turbo parts. Car had a/c from the factory. A/C is not present anymore due to weight reduction.

Maybe I find more numbers etc. from the piece when removing the paint. Just thought if specialist say for sure that it is not original then it is not worth doing any work on the piece.

group911@aol.co 10-08-2015 04:26 AM

The tail you have is incorrect for an a/c car. Sent you a message.

911Freak 10-08-2015 05:28 AM

That tail looks nearly identical to my factory non-a/c 75/76 930 tail

930 Part number should be on side support. Left side i think.

The tails are all firberglass so be careful sanding down paint looking for
Part#s.

Good luck. Hope this helps

They are not all fiberglass,i have a few wich have a metal base and a poly top
These cary a 930 serial stamped on the side
Then i have a few that are total poly which have a 930 serial in the middle brace.
It looks to me the arico wings(big grill) have a metal base and the non airco(small grill)
are most of the time total poly.
Thats at least the case whit the ones i have

Nice exploded view of a complete assembly found here;

Cornerlot 12-30-2015 06:41 PM

Well, what are the all FG ones?

With several asking the question, but no definitive answers, I'll ask again. Were there any factory ALL FIBERGLASS early whale tails? Ones with the OEM separate rubber lips.

group911@aol.co 12-31-2015 08:31 AM

I don't think so but never say never.
It would seem logical that if the factory had made one and it worked, they would have made the rest that way. It's a much simpler process.

I do not think so,as posted a few back.
From what i have in my hand here.
-The early ones whit small secondary grill(non airco) totally poly 930 serial in the middle brace.
-Second production, metal base, bigger secondary grill for arico and condenser,930 serial on the metal base side part.
I have 4 early and 3 metal base ones and all have this pattern.

panzerfaust 01-03-2016 03:22 AM

I'm looking for an early rubber lip 3.0/930 tail with no second grill or small second grill

I just bought a 911 that came with turbo tail. Part number 930.512.010.00 stamped on the metal center support.

Can anyone tell me what year and model this tail is from?

It is not correct for my 69 911S so I am going to replace it although it is in very nice shape.
Thanks for the help

That is an early Turbo Carrera tail from the first generation Turbo cars 1975-76, non-a/c equipped etc.

Nice looking piece. Let me know if you would like to sell or trade!

Hope that helps!

Thanks

Does it have a metal base? Do you have photos of the underside?

I wonder if the small vent early wing has a metal base.
The ones i have here in hand whit nr stamped in the middle dos not have a metal base.

Gib Bosworth 02-08-2016 06:07 AM

This question has been discussed in the earlier posts of this thread. I have 2 early small grill opening tails that have metal bases. The red one even has license light openings and no curved notch in the side panel as most had on later wings. My early red wing most likely was made in 74 with left over stock from long hood base lids with the license light cutouts.

Looking for the part # of the wiring harness that goes to the rear window wiper motor on a 1976 Turbo Carrera. Anyone?

javadog 04-12-2016 09:14 AM

I think I have one of those harnesses but I can't read the part number off of the tag, sorry.

Hello guys,
I'm looking for an original whale tail (74'-77'). If anyone knows something, or have something for sell, please let me know. Could be in States, Europe...doesn't matter ;)
I need it for a project, I'm working at. I bought an tea trail, but is not what I need, actually, I don't understand why I bought it.

thanks,
Daniel

javadog 05-08-2016 06:28 AM
