Just recently picked up a car that has an all fiberglass small second grill tail. Rubber is there but needs some love to line it all back up. Found a part number on the support last night. What is the consensus, does it look to be genuine?

I vote no.
No provision for mounting a wiper.
No provision for the engine bay light.
Center support looks to be 'customized'.

Looks just like other factory tails earlier in this thread. Part number seems correct. If you look back you'll find others just like it. :)

911Freak 07-22-2017 09:17 PM

Looks very similar to my factory wing. Same Euro spec: small 2nd grill, no wiper provision, same latch mount etc. Remember, these particular wings were only made for the very first Euro "Turbo Carrara". 1975-1977. From what I've read in factory PET (posted in this thread as well), and speaking to some Genuine Porsche folks who were around at the time these are the real deal.

Regardless, nice wing, clean it up correctly and enjoy or sell to an early turbo owner?

group911@aol.co 07-22-2017 09:23 PM

I don't think so.

+1 - in the 1970s and 1980s, Mitcom (and others) sold hundreds of these reproduction tails.

The real deal of that tail. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1500822997.jpg

javadog 07-23-2017 08:02 AM

One thing that gives me pause is the fact that you have a part number stamped in the center latch support and it appears to have a Porsche trademark symbol. Is that latch support made of steel?

Ferrino 07-23-2017 09:29 AM

That's an all-fiberglass tail and it looks authentic to me: the Porsche part number stamped into the gelcoat of the central structure looks legit (correct script etc.). Can you fake a part number? Sure. But you can also do the same with a metal-framed tail, so why aren't folks questioning the authenticity of all tails? I've seen quite a few tails (real and aftermarket) and one of the distinguishing features is the fit of the rubber to the tail. In the real-deal tails the fit is excellent, with not major misalignment of the rubber and fiberglass surfaces. With a lot of aftermarket tails, if they have not been worked on significantly, there are lots of big gaps at the seams.

Many of the reproduction tails do have 930 part numbers and the Porsche parts symbol. It's interesting though as to why they went as far as adding part numbers to the repro tails but the faux Fuchs never seem to have fake part #'s and the Fuchs logo. Perhaps it is more difficult to cast a part number in alloy vs. fiberglass.

A lot of the repro tails are vintage. Mitcom starting selling them in 1975 when the 930 Turbo first appeared.

Tremelune 07-23-2017 10:04 AM

I think the Porsche parts symbol is what separates the replicas from the counterfeits...

rlane930 07-23-2017 11:32 AM

I have an all fiberglass repro non-A/C tail w/ the small secondary grill hanging in my garage and it has the Porsche part # and Porsche part symbol. Pretty good quality like most fiberglass tails are but no comparison to the fit and finish of the Porsche factory original non-A/C tail on my 1975 Turbo. In addition to the lack of a metal base, most repros lack the heat shield attachment points, functional secondary grill ducting, light mounting, rear wiper attachment points, and wiper hole opening.

javadog 07-23-2017 11:32 AM

That part number sure looks nice and crisp and even. If that's actually molded into the fiberglass gelcoat, they did a damn good job.

ixxified 09-24-2017 11:56 PM

OEM or aftermarket?

Geniune or not? It's a single grille version..

group911@aol.co 10-07-2017 05:28 AM

Can you strip that tag and see what that's about?
Last picture in your first post

bkreigsr 10-07-2017 06:29 AM

That 'tag' appears to be the remnants of the welded tabs for the under-lid engine bay light.
Someone chopped the light out with a Dremmel cut-off tool along the bare edge on the right.

I removed the light from the underside of my 85 lid and that's what I was left with - I had to use a grinder to remove it.

group911@aol.co 10-07-2017 07:07 AM

I've never seen a light mounted on the side support

bkreigsr 10-07-2017 07:16 AM

I stand corrected.
I just checker my 77, and the light is screwed directly into the fiberglass-under-tray with two sheet metal screws, about an inch inboard from the rail.

What a great resource...I just read through the entire thread and learned a ton.

Happy New Year to all my Pelican brothers and sisters!

I bought a new 1982 US-spec SC, ordered from an Ohio dealer, chose options, did euro delivery, picked it up at the factory. Here are some pics from 1982 showing the tea tray spoiler and the order info for the car.

Looking to identify this repo tail,so I can correctly advertise it. My guess is non turbo early carrera or small whale tail.
It's going to Hershey next week for the chocolate swap.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523848204.jpg

I have a good but not great condition OEM tea tray tail from an '82 SC (rubber somewhat warped). From a previous owner so I don't know if it was factory, dealer or whatever, but it's Porsche stamped on the rubber and the fiberglass.

Bit of a warp to the rear of the rubber, not sure if that can be repaired. Photos available.

turbotoo 05-19-2019 07:45 AM

Anyone have a 1974 Carrera Duck Tail?

ixxified 07-23-2019 08:08 AM

Carrera Tail

I do have an original tail that came with my Carrera 3.0. The previous owner ordered the tail as extra part. So I got the car with two tails and now I decided to let this one go. I have the car for a few years now but never installed the tail.

I know these things cost some money and I am open to reasonable offers.

Here are the pictures of the tail. Rubber is in perfect condition, soft, no dry areas, no tears, scars or whatever. Tail is in fantastic condition but needs some love. The metal part that contains the serial number has some rust that could be addressed in the future. A little bit of rust in other parts of the inner frame. As far as I know, the tail has the original paint, it's Porsche paint code 936.

There is another metal shield that came with the tail.

Open to reasonable offers (I know what these things are worth). Plus shipping and PayPal fees based on actual cost.

Thanks :-)

Thanks for an extremely informative discussion.
I just purchased a spoiler without viewing it and received it this evening. Was a little disappointed that it is a replica as the base was not metal. However, after reading this post, seems that it may be part of a batch made in 1974.
In any case if it is a replica it is a pretty good one and better than the having the 3.3 spoiler on my 3.0 Turbo, so it is going on anyway.
Any conclusion on whether these were ever fitted to 930's?
