How cool is that, she is going to keep the speedster....good for her.

Grady, your karma bank account is getting full.

Full proof that miracles and "barn finds" do happen.

Grady,
I see NJ plates on the Speedster. Did this whole trove make it's way west from here? I'd be interested in hearing about it's NJ history. Could involve some people I know.

Fantastic !

One of the best threads I have seen on Pelican....

Great thread. I don't know how I missed it for six months but just read the whole thing tonight. Wonderful story.

Is there a special circle in Porsche heaven for saints like Grady? There should be...

This is a wonderful story, Grady. Thanks to you and to Uber for sharing it with us. Call me sentimental, but there's a touching element of history here that transcends the most basic urges to think of this engine as only money, (worth a $100,000+whatever) not only of Posche history but of Uber's father and his story. I'm sure for Uber it's like getting to know him all over again. Hopefully, we'll have his story soon.

To clear up a few things:

uber’s dad owned the 4-cam engine, the Speedster and several other cars including a 550 and Elva-Porsche that he raced. The Spyder and Elva he sold quite some years ago. They have happy current caretakers.

Their dad passed on several years ago and it is time to deal with the Speedster and the 4-cam engine. Both will be for sale upcoming. All the proceeds will go into a trust for the grandchildren’s education. No one (including me) is taking a commission and we are all donating our expenses. The goal is to maximize the trust in memory of the dad.

I am being somewhat coy about posting a lot more information about uber and family as Google Search is pervasive and forever.

SO…

If anyone know someone who wants/needs a running 692 engine, email me asap. Dealers/brokers need not apply unless willing to help for free. It is a good cause.

I feel I need to get more info on the Speedster and get it running. I need to look at the engine number and carburetors. It has ‘Super’ script but a ‘Normal’ tach. It last ran and had the gas drained more than three years ago. I feel it needs fuel system integrity, fresh lubricants and brake bleed and inspection. It is insured so I can drive it once it is safe to run. It has a current Colorado title and we can get a Temp CO Registration.

Best,
Grady

I just have to add my WOW this is an amazing thread. It is so cool that they found Pelican to ask a simple question about an engine.

Thank you Grady for all your help to the world of Porsche & Pelican.

Every Grady post has me on the edge of my seat. What a great story and what a community of people we have here. You guys are on my "good people" list. Thanks Grady, what a great story you are telling and a good thing you are doing.

Grady's wizardry

No one has mentioned the license plate on the Tundra in the parking lot shot. Look closely. That isn't the real number.

Grady is sure a fun-lovin' guy.;)

692-000 ?

I've been tickled by this Pelican community for more than a decade. Wonderful group. And sometimes, occasionally, they're so cool that I get a little misty. This thread is not the first time they've pulled together for a good cause and it won't be the last time. Being part of this community restores/preserves my faith in humans.

Fantastic story Grady. I agree that your good Karma account is plenty full. I couldn't think of a better guy to help uber with this event. I salute you...

Looking forward to hearing the happy conclusion of engine and car.

You just answered a question I had about this stuff. I now know that I have personally seen this engine, several years ago when the father was still alive. I spoke to him on a number of occasions as he tried to decide how to sell both the 4-cam and the 962 engine. In the end I think he decided that the market was appreciating far too quickly and that the items were best left to sit for a few more years. I think that will prove to be the right choice and his grandchildren will benefit from his very kind and generous legacy.

Whoa! I was passing over the pages of this thread and apparently had missed this...What a glorious sound!! Incredible..simply incredible:eek:

Vanity plate on the Speedster may be the answer to one of our questions (I guess that certain metal CAN talk). Thanks for stringing us along, Grady. It's like Christmas morning, each post a new present. How nice that Uber has a Speedster that looks like a Speedster, not all shiny like they never were when they were just fun sportscars that people parked on the street...

911Freak 10-13-2010 11:34 AM

Well done Grady! Uber, best wishes to you and yours and thanks for sharing this amazing experience with the Pelicans! We live for this sort of story.

More please!

Ditto.

This is the first thread that I've totally given myself over to living vicariously through another.

Thank you Grady.

Grady - how long had that 4-Cam sat without running? I am amazed it started right up!
