Yes...I do have other pics of my visit to the "Prototyp" museum in Hamburg, and maybe a new thread is advised if we continue. That said, the remaining pics ended up few in number and most were of poor quality for some reason. I simply wanted to "build" on Grady's first mention of him finding some pieces of aluminum with the Rometsch label attached....and my subsequent searches got us to the 1.1 liter, Berlin-built, pre-550, Rometsch of the pictures shown. Not meant to hi-jack.

I vote for this as the 2010 Pelican Thread of the Year! A hands down winner!

I Followed a link from the 356 Registry Forum to this great story. The ultimate 'garage find'.

The photo of the child sitting next to the 4-Cam engine in the Toyota is awesome. Someday when that child is old enough, he will understand the significance of that day and that engine!

A friend of a friend restored a 1956 Rometsch #253 over many, many, many years. It was VW powered. Started the restoration in Europe and finished it on the west coast of Canada. He recently sold the car to someone in the USA.

A truly unique piece of engineering and a special car.

I am often googleing for rometsch and now came on this topic.

I am the registryholder of the Rometsch Lawrence cars. Currently there are 30 cars known.
The batches probably come either from a Rometsch Beeskow or Rometsch Lawrence car. MOst of these cars went to the US.

The Rometsch Cabriolet owned by uber and siblings will come out of hiding soon.

It is partially disassembled but complete as far as I can tell.
I’m trying to buy a small enclosed trailer to go with the car so everything stays together.

As with the 4-cam engine and the Speedster, all the proceeds are going to an education trust for the grandchildren. The trust is now up and functioning so sales can happen.

Perhaps you can help finding the ‘right’ owner to restore this car. The goal is to bank the most money for the grandchildren while seeing the car going to a proper owner who will do justice to the restoration.
No ‘flippers’ need apply.

I know Dick Christensen in Phoenix who owns and has restored several Rometsch cars and one of only two existing Danenhauers. Let me know if you want to get in touch with him.

As far as I know Dick Christensen doesn't own any Rometsches anymore. But, yes he do owns one of the 18! known Dannenhauer en Stauss convertibels.

I will call Dan Lawson tomorrow and he will get me in touch with Dick. I worked for Competition Engineering in Phoenix when I was in college where Dick restored all his cars. It will be good to get back in touch. If he isn't interested, he will know someone who is.

Thanks for the correction, it has been a while since I was around the VW scene. I worked part time at Competition Engineering VW in Tempe, AZ in the early 90's when I was at ASU. Dick did all of his restorations there at the shop back then and stored many of his completed cars in the showroom.

If I remember correctly Dick's Dannenhauer was one of two cars found in the Chech Republic not long after the fall of the iron curtain. I think it was out in a field somewhere just rotting. When I saw the car upon its delivery to the shop it was about 50% rusted out. Dick had a guy with old school panel making skills roll out new sheet metal for all of the panels that could not be saved. He really does his research and his cars are amazing. He won the German Sports class with it in the 2007 Carmel by the Sea Concours, and almost won best of show, and was invited to Amelia Island in 2008. Most of the judges thought it was a prototype Porsche.

Regarding the Rometsch.
Most important thing is first to know with type of Rometsch it is. (Beeskow or Lawrence). Next is to see picture to check the condition of the car. Restoring a Rometsch is very hard and only a few people in the world have the right skills to work on the aluminium body and know exactly how to remove the aluminium bodypanels off the car to check and restore the metal underneath. Nine out of ten times the metal frame is corrected due to the contact with the aluminium. That is why restoring a Rometsch is so difficult and expensive.
