Distributor Install Alignment
I am nearing the end of my rebuild and finally installed the distributor today. I have a question about the alignment or orientation of the distributor.
The engine is at #1 TDC. The pulley is directly over Z1 and the valve covers are off, so it easy to confirm I am definitely #1 TDC, not #4. When I install the distributor with the rotor over #1 TDC mark, the closest I can get is a few degrees before the TDC mark. See the picture. Thanks. Wayne's book says the rotor needs to be "directly" over the TDC mark, but Bentley says "Note: The marks line up approximately, not precisely." Wayne is working on an SC in his book, but he doesn't call out anything different for a Motronic in the text. Does the Motronic system adjust for this? I searched the forum and could only find a few loose references where it stated that a Motronic doesn't need to be exact. Can anyone give me a definitive answer? Thanks.

You sould be good assuming you have some adjustment with the distributor.

There is no adjustments in the distributor, what you see is what you have. The next possibility is 30 degrees away..

No adjustment of the distributor on a Motronic car. One hole and only one position. The computer makes all the timing adjustments for you.
