A/C compressor interchangeable?
Hello, I removed the A/C compressor from my 83' 911 turbo. A friend of mine with a 87' convertible 3.2 is interested but would like to be sure that my part would fit. Pet part numbers seem to be different before and after 84 - does anyone know if my compressor could be mounted on his car? Thank you very much!

I think you probably have the old style "York" compressor on the 83.Thats what came on my 80SC originally. The later cars used a more efficient rotary style compressor. I don't think they interchange on the bracket (I could be wrong)but I would prefer the newer style as it uses less hp to turn and I believe it cools better.

Anyway... Also, the different engines - '83 3.0 and '87 3.2 - may mean different mounting, but the years of the Carreras '84, '85 had the York compressor also. If you give him your bracket with the compressor, it might work. The rotarys are more efficient. Last edited by tcar; 04-12-2010 at 04:15 PM.. |

The 83 930 used a Nippondenso, as found on the 84-89 911. All your friend needs to do is swap over the hose manifolds.

PET and Pelican show diff part numbers for the compressor on the 78-83 cars vs the 84 and up cars. Pelican shows the Denso comp being OEM on the later cars and York OEM on the earlier cars.
I have owned an 86 911 which I bought new It had the rotary or radial comp on it.I have serviced numerous Porsches over the years and Porsche only used the York in the early cars BUT it may still show up in aftermarket or dealer installed air installations. True factory air (assembly line installed) did not appear until the mid or late 70s all previous air was dealer or importer installed. Kuehl appears to have answered the original question best.
