Hello guys,
I am sorry that I do not have a good picture yet for the board. I picked up the car north of Chicago - 1982 SC with 131,000 miles. Drove 1700 miles east to New Brunswick Canada. Car is mostly fine - I will slowly fix the items one by one. One issue for advice please. My clutch works fine, in 1 to 5. But I am having a hard time getting into reverse without a bit of grinding for about 50 % of the time. I am not incline to yet touch the adjustment as forward gears work fine and nice. This is my second 911, with 915 transmission. I am use to it somewhat but the reverse issue is . . . ? Any suggestion please. Thank you. JCFL now 1982 SC Chiffon White formerly a 1984 black / black |

I just had my 915 rebuilt and my mechanic found the reverse bearing wasnt seated properly inside the transmission. He had to send it to a machine shop to reseat the bearing. Hopefully thats not your case but check the simple things first. Coupler adjustment, bushings, etc..

When you push the clutch pedal in, wait a little while before engaing reverse. If it still grinds, wait a little longer or select a forward gear first, then select reverse. If you still have an issue, have a complete clutch adjustment performed, including setting the free play (and preload on the cable) and measuring and adjusting the travel of the cable at the transmission end. My reverse grinds also, unless I come to a complete stop in any gear, then go right into reverse from the gear while not moving. Try it.

Reverse has no sincros. The method I use is shifting in 1st and then reverse. Thats with the car completely stopped, of course.

If waiting about 5 seconds with your foot on the clutch doesn't stop it grinding (assuming a sane idle speed) then your clutch isn't disengaging fully. Could be adjustment of the pedal, cable etc. Equally, it could be contamination of the clutch plate with oil or the clutch plate may not be sliding freely on the splines of the transmission input shaft. How 'bout a siezed pilot bearing in the flywheel?

Agree on the synchros!!!
With vehicle completely stopped, in neutral with clutch out, tap accelarator to hear engine, let idle drop (just counted your wait time and got to listen the purr!), engage clutch, move to Reverse. If you still have the grinding repeat above but go to first then into reverse. The key is to be at a dead stop and do not rush it. Synchronised reverses have us spoiled. I remember this everytime I have driven my in-laws Model A, non-synchronised, double clutch. I still double clutch when downshifting.
