Question How many 2.7 owners? Problems?

Just trying to see how many people here have the 2.7 in thier cars, and problems they have encountered etc.

1. Year of car/ engine
2. Mileage
3. Where you live -ie Cold climate warm
4. Modifications done -ie tensioners, exhaust etc
5. Any problems encountered- head studs etc

Mine
1. 1977
2. 100,000 KMs
3. Canada
4. Hydraulic tensioners installed last year,
Thermal reactor was gone before I ever bought it (4 years)
11 Blade fan
5. NO LOOSE HEAD STUDS- checked last year-will check again this year. Nothing bad at all!

I think these engines are getting a bad rap, just want to see how everyone else is doing with these cars.

Complete the rating poll too!

Shawn

1.Mine= 77 911S
2.Miles 88k
3. IL-USA
4.Mods= carrera tensioners, dilavar studs, 11-blade fan, turbo valve covers
5. No loose head studs... recently torn down to fix some of the PO rebuild issues (a bad company in Indy built it very badly), New seals etc.

I love it so much... 2.7's are just fine for me. Let's start a 911S plot to rule like the sc's! Our something to the effect of a relatively undue bad rep. Email me if interested
Best,
Pete

2.7L

Mine: 1974 2.7L coupe
Just finished complete rebuild. Pulled studs were the major problem. Just 300 miles driven since the rebuild, very impressed with the results so far. Engine has a wonderfull sound and amazing pickup for only 160hp. Only time will tell....

Thumbs up

Have had a '74 CIS @ 165 hp (just changed to Webers as part of a race project) and a '75 MFI @ 210 hp.

Both engines had the usual updates, like tensioners and studs, done at about 60K miles. Both were preventative measures with no prior leaks or other problems.

I have heard good things about the 3.2 and others but they all seem to offer something different and there are tradeoffs with any model.

IMO the 2.7 is an excellent engine when the basic updates are done, and a good candidate for mods to increase hp.

Car: 1975 ROW 911S Targa.
Miles: 65,000
Location: UK
Problems: Needed valve guides at 60,000 miles. When it was apart no pulled headstuds found. Had it time-serted despite be told there was no real need to.
Runs great now - after 3 months standing recently the WUR wasn't getting a live feed but it was just a corroded fuse holding.

2.7s are great, in this climate anyhow. Fast, and wonderful handling. Not as pretty and fine as the pre '73 but less *bulk* than an SC - and just as fast if not slightly faster, in UK spec.

1. '69 911T with 2.7 based on 2.0 S engine and Webers
2. approx. 14,000 mi. since rebuild
3. Sunny So. Calif.
4. RS pistons/cyl., E cams, ported heads, hyd. tensioners, stock exhaust, Dilavar head studs, piston squirters, shot peened and balanced.
5. No problems save for a minor oil leak (gotta examine the rocker shafts)

I've ranted about this before. If the factory had installed thermal reactors, a 5-bladed fan, air pump and other "emission-control" devices of the era on any 911 engine, their inherent flaws and/or shortcomings would be exaggerated as well (worn valve guides, broken head studs, head gasket leaks, etc.).

A more accurate survey description would be "original factory 2.7 engines built in '75-'76."

Never had one, but okay for me to vote? Dying to see the poll results. If I had a vote it would be "good engine with a few mods"...just an opinion. Edit: Curiosity got me...Love it!

My car:
77 911S Coupe
140,000+ Miles
Colorado - Hot and cold
Mods: Carrera Chains tensioners (in'84), 11 blade fan
No problems yet. I searched through all the paperwork when I bought it, nothing about replacing head studs. Would have thought they would have been done when the Chain tensioners were, but nothing noted..
I agree with others, is real peppy and a kick to drive. I am saving to do the heat exchanger swap, and look into a rebuild in 1-2 years. Til then , I'll drive it and not worry...

'75S, 113k miles, rebuilt by PO at about 90k.

I ASSUME it was head studs, but who knows.

Now is tight, leak free and quick.

i bought my 74 at 270,000 the 2.7 had been rebuilt at some point but was worn out and i built it to a 2.9.

i just bought a 77 for the original owner with 206,000 on the original engine and it has never been opened up. it also has seen better days and now needs a rebuild but i think 200+ is amazing on a 2.7. the po did remove the thermal reactors early on.

I have a rebuilt (by the PO) 2.7 motor from a '75, with timeserts, 11 bladed fan, SSI's (no emissions) and a stainless muffler (don't know what type) on my '73T. It's a great combo, quick, torquey, easy to use with the CIS. Sounds great, and no problems so far, although it leaks oil more than I would like. I'm really happy with it, for an inexpensive but inspiring T.

1974 911 coupe
170k miles
2.7 apart in my garage for bearings and a complete reseal
I have only driven it 45 miles (from prev owner's house to mine). I dropped the engine/gearbox "to clean it up and fix a few oil leaks", next thing I know, I have the crank out and the heads apart to clean EVERYTHING and reseal. How many of you said the same thing? I guess I am too particular.

Cool

Car: 911S 1975 Silver Anniversay Edition
Engine: 1977 (PO blew engine caused by broken oil line) just rebuild (1100 km's) stretched studs (not pulled cranks were ok) valve job etc..
No further updates to the engine
Runs like a dream at the moment, although I do still have so drops of oil.
Wish winter was over and I could drive the car more regulary. Just have to sit and wait until spring!

But I do like it a lot. Basically I like the design of these earlier 911's and am sure that if you put a 3.2 in there it will be equal (or better) fun!

Thumbs up

1) 1976 911S Targa

2) 79,000 Miles

3) Upstate NY

4) Removed smog blower, thermal reactors, and entire exhaust system and installed 1974 style headers and B&B Sport muffler. Have an 11-Blade fan, and pressure fed chain tensioners.

5) I have had some problems with the engine staying reved up to 2K RPM on start-up. I replaced the WUR and the problem went away.

This is my first Porsche and I love it. I bought the car for a cheap price because of the problems assoicated with 2.7L engines. The exhaust modifications that I have made to the car improved the performance greatly.
I have driven a 2.7L RS spec engine and was truly amazed. The car had Euro P&C's, and MFI. I have also driven a 3.2L DME car and I thought that the 2.7L RS Spec engine had more power.
I currently have one chamber that has slightly low compression. I am planning on doing a complete rebuild. I am currently saving for all the mods that I want to make.

MY GOAL: 2.7L complete re-build (Valves, guides, bearings, etc.), new Euro P&C's , "E" or "S" Cams, 40 IDA-3C Webers or PMO's, and the installation of raceware studs if the upgrade has not already been made.
I cannot afford an aftermarket injection system, and I have never been able to find MFI parts. I am basically heading toward the engine described in the B. Anderson handbook.

Long live the 2.7L. I think that the majority of the bad press that the 2.7L gets is due to the thermal reactors and the increased heat. I wonder how a 3.0L would respond to the same conditions.

Wink

Complete rebuild and up-grade on 2.7. Competitiom Engineering did all machine work. Sent parts there UPS. Installed RS 2.7 P&C. Curious about weight of piston compared to 3.2 pistons. I got this fobia about heavy pistons and rod bearing wear. Forged pistons will last longer than stock. Disconnected adv/ret on Calif. dizzy, run 5 deg. initial BTDC

-1975
-3500 miles on a rebuild
-Kentucky, USA
-Webers, Solex cams, headers, oil fed tensioners, raceware studs, 11 blade fan, breakerless ignition, time-certed case
-Only problem since I rebuilt it is a few of the rocker shafts are leaking. Highly recommend having rocker shaft seals installed whenever you have the shafts out.
