3.6 conversion ?'s these are different, I promise!
Picking up a 91 3.6L so I'm reading up on all that's needed, BUT here's my unique questions...
car is a 1980 with a 993 bodykit, and 993 oiltank, and needs to pass Ca. smog Can I use a complete 993 exhaust system (flip the flanges on pass side H.E.) and get it all to fit since the rear bumper is 993? ![]() Would I still be able to use the stock 964 pulleys and A/C comp with a modified stock 964 engine mount?

you can install the 993 HE, cat and both mufflers but the mufflers will hit the rear valances on both sides. You need to cut and reweld the muffler mounts with a different angle.
You also need to think about a solution for the oil feed line. with the 993 oil tank the oil feed like will run on top of the passenger side muffler and gets pretty hot. you are fine with 964 pully and A/C comp. the engine cross member needs only to be bent at the outer section for about 2 inch and wont affect the pully or the compressor. |

hmm its seems that with 993 quarters the 993 exhaust would work, Kevin

I'll have to find a complete used system and check it out. For now do you guys think the stock 964 exhaust will work?

The 964 exhaust does NOT work as the crossover interferes with the clutch throwout lever on a 915.It should work with a G 50. You can us a Carrera system complete with Cat and single outlet to a Carrera muffler or a pair of 993 HEs with 993 cats. The 993s produce more power but cats alone are loud. 993s require the flanges to be flipped on the pass side. Some engines have 2 sets of threaded holes at the exhaust ports which should allow you the option of flipping the studs on the pass head. My 1991 engine only had one set of stud holes so I had to flip the flanges. I am not familiar with the later oil tanks as I used my SC tank with the crossover tube that drops under the bellhousing area .The same style which works with SSIs

Ok, so now to the 993 oil tank, am I correct in assuming since the 964 oil system is very similar to the 993 as far as plumbing goes, that I can use stock 993 oil lines to and from the engine?

to the engine yes, I use the 993 oil line to the engine in combination with a 964 oil tank. But from the engine is another story.
I would say depends on the Header or HEs that you use and also the tranny is somehow crossing the way of the oil return line. It didn't work for me and I made my own oil return line. ![]() |

I was planning on using 993HE's and cat, with resonator tips directly on the cat outlets.

the oil return line in a 993 is running right underneath the tranny where the 915 has its clutch fork is located.

I already have the clutch and early hard oil line from the engine. So need to research the non-specialty items for the conversion.
Also can I use 964/993 rear hood hinges to keep the stock heater and aircleaner? I modified the stock brackets to bolt to the GT2 tail, so I was thinking if the 964/993 brackets bolt to the body the same that I can use them so I don't have clearance issues.

no, the stock 964/993 hings would interfere with the aircleaner on the passenger side. Even if you would re weld them they would hit the aircleaner cover. Either you cut the aircleaner cover or you go with sport cone airfilters and get rid of the complete stock aircleaner unit.
I wanted to keep the stock 993 aircleaner and cheesed to go with a pair of old 911 R hinges. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I did find a set of 993 HE's and have a 993 cat on its way. I should be able to find a set of cheap stock mufflers to see if it will fit, if not, I think someone else just welded a set of resonator tips to the cat outlets and it wasn't too terribly loud.
now it's just deciding Timmins or PM conversion parts. The flywheel is $50 cheaper at PM, but the wiring harness is about $50 cheaper at instanG.

I went with Timmins and it was a pretty straight forward job. He also replied every time I had a question. I tried the resonator tips on the cat but the set up was extremly laud and was not fun at all.

Patrick used to make the flywheels for both PM and Instant G. I think Timmons has a source elsewhere now. The PM harness includes a lead for a check engine light which Timmons didn't when I did mine.

I ended up emailing Patrick Motorsports for the parts since I wanted the wiring harness with the warning light wire, and wow am I impressed, I had a call about the parts from him, and he asked if I had any questions. I paid for my order and it was shipped today. Being in the aircooled VW parts Biz, I was very satisfied with the customer service so far, especially since I have never had any previous contact with them.
