Started my 930 brake upgrade
well I have began sourcing parts for this popular upgrade.
rear calipers for 300...it has begun now I need fronts, rear rotors, but the doosy is the fuch that I need to complete the project. Anyone have leads on forums or part guys? Or do you have leads on 9" fuchs, 8" 944turbo, or the front calipers? I am trying to do this DIY style and not pay the ridiculous 3K they want for parts that are 20 years old...that is a 1/3 of the value of my car. Also what about front rotors? I know I can go with early 930 rotors? the floating type? I am planning on getting the measurements for these custom hats going for 300.00 and get a machine shop to make me some...but what about the rotors themselves? Can I buy some OEM part and have them machine it to be able to take the custom hats I am going to get made? Rennsport Systems sells custom Brembos...what is custom about them? Can I get the brembos straight from a brembo dealer and mount the hats (the ones I am going to have made...)? I think this is much cheaper then 700 for a pair of rotors. Also is there a way I can run these brakes with larger spacers so I do not have to machine off the fins? I know the machining of the mounting holes is unavoidable? But what about the rear and front fins? I like the looks, and would like to keep them as original as possible (besides the 2 counter sunk holes and cut off old mounting ears) but the fins are also in some ways for cooling, no??? And what about brake lines as well as master cylider I think fronts take OEM, but is that OEM SC or OEM 930? The rears, rennsport says they send a straight brake line and instructions on how to bend it, because each car is different. MC I know the mercedes 23mm is used often...also the 930 cylider. What are the rules between boosted and non-boosted cars? Any ideas? I will try to keep you updated and with pictures and write a step by step upgrade article for all those interested...I have to rebuild these babies as well...I know this is overkill for my 3.0SC with 200 crank hp (with early heat exchangers...) but it is motivation for me to build a a hotrod motor, since I will have sunk this money and effort...which brings me to my next post.. thanks Last edited by 82SC; 12-13-2001 at 09:47 AM.. |

I am working with my friend at Brembo on 993TT set up for my 78SC. Brembo does not make the modified parts themselves. They do sell directly if you know what you want. (714)641-5831
Brembo North America supplies parts to Race Technology in Marina Del Ray, CA, who in turn makes the modifications http://www.racetechnologies.com/ Contact Jaime and he may be able to help you with the problem areas. Fuchs seem to be plentyful for some reason, both here and on the Rennlist site. That shouldn't be a problem. I'm just bummed because I want to unload mine for the Fikses. Just not the Fuchs you need.

Thom Fitzpatrick recently did this mod on his '77 check the following links for some info; The rear rotors required are the oem '78-89 930 rear rotors. The mounting holes for the rear caliper need to be redrilled.
The front rotors are either '78-79 930 oem floating(which can be solidly mounted) or aftermarket non-floating replicas(Coleman is the most common supplier). The hats for either rotor are easy, there is no offset so just have the correct inner and outer radius and drill the holes in the correct spot to bolt up the rotors and the hubs. The front 78-89 930 caliper will bolt directly to your 3.5" ear SC front strut. You do not even need to change out your mc. The '82 uses a 20.5 mm vacuum boosted cylinder which is adaquate for the '78-89 930 calipers. If desired a higher harder pedal can be obtained by bolting in a 23mm 78-89 930 mc, again for the '82 SC this is a straight swap. They will fit in 911 7x16 +23.3 mm os Fuchs, with at the most an ~6mm spacer to obviate clearance issues. 944 7s or 8s will not need the spacers.

I was surprised by the idea of removing the fins on the rear (yes, they provide extra cooling- more surface area). I guess if you used something like 17 in. wheels with a large offset (993/964 wheels with spacers, or replicas w/built in spacers) should clear. That's just a guess on my part.
The early 930 (78-79 I think) floaters are said to be noisy since the rotor moves axially on the hub. Maybe that's why VCI offers the custom hats. Doesn't Jack Olsen have the floating rotors? http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/FrontRightBrake.jpg See the pins in the inner hub of the rotor? He can tell you if they're noisy. Check the link below that's currently on Rennlist. One fella said others w/the 930 MC didn't like the heavy pedal effort? http://forums.rennlist.com/scripts/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001463 Good luck. Be interested to see how much $$$ you save by doing your own leg work. Hopefully it'll be a bunch.

I have the floating rotors, but the hat holds them in place -- so they're not floating anymore. (Click for a bigger picture.)
![]() I did lose the fins in back, saving me from spacers, there. Honestly, when was the last time rear brakes overheated and boiled, though? All of my cooling emphasis is on the fronts. Got fins there, as well as a cool brake kit.

With 9x16 in the back there is tons of room for any caliper up to and including a Big Red. Though why anyone would put a Big Red in the back is beyond me.

Jack,
Why'd you implement the floaters if they don't actually float? Cost or just wanted to stick with O.E. Porsche rotors? Thanks.
