Hi, I've only posted a couple of questions, so thanks in advance for your reply. I have a stock '83 SC with 110,000 miles owned 9 months.
Problem is the speedometer reads 10 mph or so low. Odo works, speedometer otherwise works smoothly, tire size is stock/ correct. What do I need to troubleshoot to fix? visconage@verizon.net ![]() |

Pelican or North Hollywood Speedo will calibrate and also replace the infamous plastic gear that usually breaks.

Check to make sure the pick-up at the transmission is seated and not damaged.

Interesting. I thought the general consensus was that the speedo's read about 5-10 miles high.

When I'm doing 50 the speedo reads 60 mph just so I've given a clear description of the issue.

same thing for me - when i am doing 70 my speedo says 81-82, which also happens right at about 28-2900 in 5th. i've often wondered how many extra miles the odometer is putting on and how long it has been happening.

Speedos are calibrated to read slightly higher, about 5%.
If it reads 10 M/ph higher, it needs to be calibrated. The myth that it should read 5-10 Miles higher is the same myth that one has to come to a full stop to re-set the trip meter. ![]() It'll never die. ![]()

North Hollywood will recalibrate it for you - and make it look purty. They also do some nifty custom work...

Thanks for the comments everbody. Seems the concensus is that I should send the meter in for calibration, assuming mo loose or damaged sensor connection at the trans. Chuck

I thought the spedometer was just a suggestion? Mine is definitely reads high so I just use the RPM and selected gear to estimate speed.

I used my GPS to compare to the speedometer reading and found it is was running 8-10 mph faster. Sent it out for calibration... now it is spot on.
