Clones of the Future
It used to be that the pre-impact-bumper cars were cheap and plentiful, and it was pretty common to flare the rear and make RS clones out of them. More recently, there have been a few R and RSR clones, but the tide may slow as the cars become more valuable and rare.
It got me thinking that the 1974-1989 911's, Carreras and SC's are still losing value (although very slowly relative to other cars), and are so plentiful that I'm surprised more aren't turned into clones of one of Porsche's famous impact-bumper cars. If I had a 74-89 car as a starting point, I'd have a hard time resisting the cloning call of the Yellowbird or IROC cars. But I don't see many impact-bumper cars going in that direction. Am I simply out of touch, or does anyone else think there are going to be waves of clones in the next five years that look like one of these? ![]() Has anyone on Pelican already done them? I see that Sameer's car is close to a Yellowbird, but he's got a 3.8 tail.

![]() ![]() Maybe I'm part way there already? It does make sense what Jack says......perhaps post Mustang fastback/retro/ muscle car/early car popularity, this is the future. Complete replication (not mine) of some of the classic 80s and 90s stuff -

I think that there's getting to be a lot of Yellowbird type cars floating around.
the new clones will be 964 RS and 993RS

964 rs will be fairly easy to do on 69-94 chassis. making a 993 rs out of a pre-993 car will be more costly

I have an IROC bumper on my 930 now, and if I change it down the road I'll either switch to a full 934 body kit or the 964 3.8 RS.

Our '74 RSR clone race car based on a '75 Carrera. We plan to get it stripped down and repainted Mexico Blue at the end of the year. Currently having a 3.4 twin plug built.
Seems like starting with a '79 SC which already has the rear flairs may be the way to go. ![]() |

making a 993 rs out of a 993 car is costly enough

Is this any indication of the RUF cloning effort?
![]() Ultimate RUF Conversion Thread I've got the parts to turn my Carrera into a CTR/BTR-esque clone, both visually and mechanically ![]() The Carreras are going to continue to drop in prices as more and more of them will need topend rebuilds...and as they age. They'll make perfect candidates for turbocharged beasts given their EFI and plenum features. Last edited by MotoSook; 08-30-2005 at 01:26 PM.. |

I'm converting to the yellowbird look shortly. The Ruf Yellowbird, and the road&track article in 1987, are what turned me into a car enthusiast and 911 fan. So, yeah, maybe your guess has merit.

I want to build a semi-street legal 935 clone with enough power to back up the look so bad I can taste it.
Other than that, I'd just as soon keep the stock SC look. It's hard to improve on perfection ![]() Muhaha and all that. |

I will be putting my IROC style front and rear bumpers on my 84 this fall, finally. It will still use the standard carrera flares though and should look good with the ducktail. Wait, maybe I will sell that stuff and go long hood RS.......

i think the high number of ruf conversions are a result of of a lack of choice for lightweight bumpers on our impact bumper cars.
its pretty much either ruf or iroc. The one thats growing on me is the 964 RS (and 3.8 RSR for that matter)

I guess the price to performance ratio is always the thing that keeps ideas ideas. 300+hp out of a NA engine and twin turboing is not an inexpensive undertaking........
I suspect the 964 RS will be the simplist to make viable and on all accounts is the best "stradle" era car. All the benefits of the modern era with the "feel" of the earler cars (non power steering versions). Delete all unecessary non performance items, rechip and pipe, rollcage and wheels and you are almost there. One other car that we in Melbourne are blessed with replica wise is the Fitzgerald 968TurboRS. This is a 350hp+ with Motec management and no lag. Hmmmm. Simon

Great question Jack, if I recall I asked the same question about a year ago, but a bit more focused to the IROC replica. I think my car would be a great candidate for the IROC replica, just change out bumpers and tail (loose some weight along the way too) -

I've always thought Yellowbird's performance was a good goal to shoot for cloning, but keeping as stock a look as possible. "Mit radio" of course.

Personally, I've always liked the 964 RS look and do wish to get there (or maybe IROC look) one day. If I ever decide to go fiberglass, it'll be a no-brainer. So many mods...so little time (actually, cash).
