Condensor fan questions
1987 911 Carerra.
When the car came to me it had no condensor fan relay. I have gotten a relay that was pulled from a similar car in the same location. My problem is that the car is not telling the relay for the condensor fan to turn on. The compressor kicks on and the air blows cold but I am wondering if this thing is supposed to be running anytime the compressor is, or if it is on some sort of pressure switch that cuts it on and off. I am worried about the compressor having to suck in 134 that is still liquid. I have only let the ac run for 20 seconds tops since I have figured this out. FYI, If I put power to the turn on circuit of the relay, the relay kicks on and the fan works. The Bentley says it is a green and white wire i think, but the car has a grey wire instead. All wires except this one do what they are supposed to. Thoughts? |

whenever the compressor is engaged. If it does not, high system pressures will increase to a serious level. I'm not aware of any pressure relief valve until the '88-89 911 3.2 cars, and, some question if it is even there. Check the fan connector, also, add a 10A fuse if not already installed. On our '86, I put an LED accross the condensor fan connector which indicates when the compressor is engaged. you may pm me. Good luck, Gerry ![]()

Thanks for the reply....
OK so if the condensor fan is supposed to be on anytime the compressor is then it seems there would be a break in the circuit for the power to the "turn on" lead for the condensor fan relay. The Bentley manual diagram describes a four wire junction where the hot lead comes from the a/c relay and shoots power to the DME, the compressor clutch, and the condensor fan relay. Anyone know where this junction may be in the car? The diagram only describes it as junction 50 and tells you nothing else. |

You sure the fan is working? They fail with some frequency and can overheat and start a fire.
Hook the fan up to 12V (battery) to check if you haven't already. Easy as it's only a couple inches away. |

You can have the front condenser relay turn on and off with the compressor by triggering it
with the ac relay in the smuggler's box. |
