Loose fan belt, wrong pulley?

I have a euro 1980 911 SC and the fan belt started slipping. I took it apart and all of the shims are on the outside of the pulley, not four inside like the tech article shows. Which prevents me from tightining the belt any further.

The belt is a Dayco and a cross-reference shows that it is listed as fitting my car. I am starting to think that maybe the pulley isn't correct for my car. I have attached a picture of mine, does this look the right pulley?

maybe your belt stretched. When I drove my car from San Diego to Santa Cruz I broke a belt. I had to go through 7 before I found the one that fit spending half a day in a gas station. The one that fit wasn't the recommended belt by porsche.

I've had good luck with the service-free continental belts. I've never had one stretch, and the fit is consistent. I've heard more good reviews about them than even the Porsche-branded belts.

Agreed. Way too flared out, no holes for the pulley wrench and has two notches on the outer rim of the pulley. Not a 911 pulley.

Kurt,

This might help.

There should be some shims on both sides of the pulley halves.

Good luck,

Gerry

Be sure to buy the one pulley outer (all you need), it's a lot easier to place the shims and cup washer. I would buy new shims and cup washer too, but that's me.. you will need the correct Porsche wrench also..

The picture above is good, but they make the washers look like thick spacers rather than the thin shims they are..

Thanks, I thought it looked wrong but wanted to make sure. I'll get the new pulley half, shims, and
cup washer ordered. Hopefully can get the belt tightened and the car back on the road.

Ryan -

Don't forget the wrench if it isn't in your tool kit, you need to have it, the correct socket, and a spare belt with you..

Ryan,

On our '86, two shims between the pulleys, four shims in the cup.

Fan belt P/N 999 192 176 50 9.5mm X 710mm.

Three in, three out is a good place to start. After the pulley is tightened down run that engine for a minute and then recheck the tension. If the belt has become loose again take one of the shims from inside and place it outside the outer pulley half, try again. There is no rule againt having all 6 shims on the outside as long as the tension seems correct. If you've got all 6 shims outside the split pulley and the belt still slips it is time for a new belt.

Definitely a VW pulley...and not a very good one, at that. Chuck it and get the correct part.

I guess you removed the bolt for the housing strap???? If not, make sure you get one and tighten it down before you install the belt.

Hope you don't mind this sidebar but related question here:

I just got a new fan belt in my latest order from PP and it is a notched v-belt. None of my old ones I have around are notched. It is a Continental belt. Is this the normal now for these. Does the notching help with anything? Or do I have the wrong belt?

No, I didn't, trying to figure that out. Not sure if the bolts the wrong size or if the threads are stripped but when I was working on it I found that it was loose and just spun when I attempted to tighten it. Thanks for pointing it out.
