Please help! Those who have converted to 964 gauges.

I am in the process of buttoning up the 964 gauge swap into my 82 SC. I am attempting to modify the fuel level sender to work with the gauge. I have the 964 adapter, i just need help figuring out how to modify the sender. I am usually good with stuff like this, but it looks totally different from what i was expecting. Here are some pics.
Here is the wiring schematic that was posted up before, which is all well and good, but it just does not make sense to me after pulling the damn thing apart.

here is a pic of the sender taken apart from its cylinder.

the small wires loop all the way around, from what i can tell, it goes from the signal wire, to the ground.
and here is a view from the top

It would be highly appreciated if someone can help me out, either that, or i could send it to you, and pay you to modify it.
Thanks in advance

Scott, this is my schematic, I drew it to explain what I did to my fuel sender. I have since modified another one for a friend and it was slighly different on the inside. In summary the stock 911 fuel sending unit has the aluminum tube and the resistive wire connected to GND. Here is the other page showing both systems:

For the electronic module to work properly the resistive wire and the wiper contact on the wire should not be grounded but only connected to the electronic unit. The sending unit itself is made from plastic. So there is no need for a ground.

On the other hand the empty light works by the fuel sender providing GND to the gauge (light). So I had to isolate the resistive wire from the housing (GND).

I would help you but I am leaving for a long international trip this week and will be back sometimes in August.

Cheers,
Ingo

I'm curious...

What is the advantage of 964 gauges over the stock gauges? Why are you doing this?

Just want to know.

Or is it just cosmetic?

I did mine for a number of reasons: My old tach had the bounces. Then I did not want to swap the oil pressure and temperature sensors on the 3.6 engine and finally I like the looks of the newer gauges, especially at night.

i just like the updated look of the 964 gauges, no real advantage, with the exception of the better gauge lighting.

You asked me for how I did modified mine. I am posting here so others can benefit, too. Here is what I seem to remember. Be careful not to disturb the tension of the fine wire because you are cutting one leg.

Thanks so much! i assume you drilled a small hole in the sender body to thread the ground wire in? Worse come to worse i can get the gauge itself working without hooking up any ground, i just will not have my low fuel light working correct?

No drilling. THe pin with the arrow "connect to GND" is connected to GND on the outside. That is it. Then I ran a wire around that gets jammed by the aluminum tube so the tube is at GND as well

Because they're a back light type. The pre 964 gauges use no back lighting and incandescent bulbs to light the face of the gauges.

Personally I prefer the earlier gauges... I'm an old fart so i like things retro

Ingo,
I too have a 3.6 conversion in my '80SC and have wanted to convert to 964 gauges for all the reasons you did! Are there a lot of adaption problems with the tach. speedo, etc? I looked at the backside of the gauges, and it looked like a kind of daunting procedure. Any thoughts on your experience and methods would be appreciated.
thanks
Grant

When i bought mine, they came with the factory connectors for the gauges. Its not really that hard to do, i had to figure out what wire went to what, most of the wiring on the old gauges are ground wires, and positive leads that all connect together. All of my indicator lights work like they should. All the rest of the gauges work with all of your SC senders, with the exception of the fuel gauge, and low fuel light.
