I think I found my shifting problem

I noticed my shifter has become very sloppy recently. I tried the easy fix of a new WEVO shift coupler. That helped, but I could never get the shifter adjusted to get into 1st & second and still get into 5th.

I think I found the problem.

The bushing was in two pieces, and each piece had split. It just fell off the shift rod. For those that don’t know the black bushing is what a regular shifter bushing is supposed to look like.

To remove the center console on a 1985 Carrera is a pain to do. It is not overly difficult but figuring out how to get everything apart is a tedious process. The manual shows the process for a newer vehicle, not the 85 and I assume the 84 model.

I ran out of time yesterday getting it back together so I have not driven the car with the new bushing in place.

THAT WILL DO IT!!!

Did you fit the new bushing yet? I think you have to heat it in hot water to make it more pliable for fitting.

My bushing came from Pelican and it popped in with very little difficulty. I did not need to heat it at all.

I replaced the ball cup on the bottom of the shifter “while I was in there” and that was more difficult to pop into place.

I had to cut a slot in the carpet in front of the shifter to have enough room to get the carpet up high enough to get the bolts that hold the bracket in place. Since the cut in the carpet will be under the console it never show.
