alignment settings
i'm about to have an alignment done to my 85 911 and i'm wondering what some of you guys run as far as settings go (the shop doing it for me will set it to my specs)
any camber/caster/toe information would be great. i do want a slightly "aggresive" setup as i will be doing some schools and open track days here in ohio in the spring (nelsons ledges/mid-ohio) but i do need to preserve tire wear in the front to a minimum. basically i'm looking for a happy medium for how the car will be driven (track/street) thanks bell 85' 911 |

I had my car set up for street/track. Here are my alignment settings:
Front, - 0.8 deg. camber, 5.8 deg. caster, 0.01 deg. toe Rear, -1.3 deg. camber, 0.07 deg. toe. I would also get your car corner balanced when you get an alignment.

I have found the settings here to be excellent in terms of tire wear and handling:

I've run -1 degree of camber in the front and -1.5 in the rear for several years. No tire wear problems.

Joe, those settings have virtually no camber which will lose a ton of your cornering power. Most everyone that I have ever heard from recommends around -1 to -1.5 deg of camber for street driving. The factory recommends 0 deg front and then, I think, -1 deg rear on non-turbos which is a setup that will give a fair amount of understeer, good tire wear, but not the best handling.

Steve,
Bell mentioned he was looking for a happy medium. It seems that the factory settings would be fine for his needs as well as mine. I have, in the past, tried the negative camber settings that you recommend and found them to be too harsh and very uncomfortable resulting in twitchy handling, too easy to understeer in front and no improvement in rear adhesion when cornering. Going back to factory settings was a revelation! Cheers, Joe Garcia 86 Carrera Redwood PCA since 1976 Last edited by stlrj; 01-04-2002 at 12:49 PM.. |

Here are the "performance/street" alignment settings I use that offer a great compromise between handling and tire wear:
Front camber: -1.0 Front caster: 6.1 Front toe: .05 Front cross camber: 0.0 Front cross caster: 0.0 Total toe: .09 Rear camber: -1.8 Rear toe: .09 Total toe: .18 Also, here are some numbers from the last time I had the car on the scales (weight balanced): Left front: 614lb. Right front: 612lb. Left rear: 945lb. Right rear: 874lb. Total weight: 3045lb. (170 lb. in the front driver's seat, 1/2 tank of fuel). |
