930 turbo won't start

I previously had a thread where I was having problems with my 86 911 Turbo. I thought my fuel pumps were working but obviously not. i heard the whining and thought that was them but it was something else I was hearing. I just changed out the red fuel pump relays and instantly heard them fire up. Still no start so I pulled a plug and checked for spark but no spark. Is there some sort of safety where it senses that there is no fuel and kills the spark or what should I go about checking now that I have no spark? Thanks.

This shouldn't be different on a turbo, so check the green signal wire from the distributor to the CDI box. Is it brittle, or cracked anywhere? It could be that you're not getting signal from the distributor to the CDI.

I'm guessing the CDI box is working since you heard a "whining" before you replaced the relays.

Yeah I thought that it could have been the CDI box but I am hearing it run when I turn the key.

I just went downstairs and checked that green wire that goes to the distributor and it is scored with copper showing.

Well the box powering up and it sending a signal to the coil are two different things. That green wire gets its signal from the distributor to fire the coil.

Not that this is you but I had a 911 that the new owner could not figure out how to start. Turns out it had no ignition rotor inside the cap.

there is a delayed ignition cut-off relay that goes bad. 12V goes through it on the way to power the CD unit. when the engine shuts off, it keeps the ignition on for a few seconds so the injectors bleed out. check for 12V at the red wire in the CD unit plug. if no voltage, check for voltage into that relay, which is the small rectangle unit mounted to the rear of the larger rear defrost relay in the engine area, left side. has four terminals and a small tube on the bottom. you can make a jumper wire with spade terminals to bypass the relay. take the plug off and jump the red wires in the plug. the pair that are closest to the engine.

I finally ended up just buying a new ignition cut off relay and just installed it but still no 12v at coil. Any other ideas?

Sounds like the CDI is gone. It would be nice of someone else in your area could post up with a working one so you could plug it in and test that.

you never get 12V @ the coil. you should always check voltages around a CD system with a voltmeter or you risk damaging the CD. you do get 12V @ the red wire in the CD plug. did you test the old relay to see if it passed the 12V through it and on to the CD unit? does the unit whine? is the green wire deteriorated at the distributor plug?

The only way to properly test a 6-pin CDI box (or any CDI box at that) is by having it producing a spark. The whining itself is required but not sufficient to give it a clean bill of health.

Unfortunately, with the 6-pin boxes triggering isn't as straight-forward as with the 3-pin version where you just close the points. For the 6-pin you need to provide a negative signal to the triger input. A 1.5V AAA battery hooked up reverse will do the trick.

maybe your inlet system is not hermetical, so vacuum does not pull you throttle plate down, and then your fuel pump and spark are killed, thats why it does not start. Try to remove air filter box and push throttle plate a bit, while someone will turn the starter.
at least this helped for me.

P.S. sorry for my poor english...

Fuel pumps are both working. Just no spark so checked the + side of the coil and have nothing there.
