Spark Plug Dimentia
I'm getting ready to go through the maintainance items on my 89 930. While I was putting together my parts list I priced the Porsche recommended Bosch W3DPO's. Needless to say I have never heard of a $12 spark plug.... so I started looking into the alternatives. The parts catalog here lists the BPR6ES as the NGK plug for the 89 911 Turbo, so I did some forum searching to see what I could find. After reading a number of posts I get the impression that the 6 series NGK's could be too hot for most driving conditions. I then checked the NGK site and they recommend the BP8EVX. This brings several questions to mind.
Is the Bosch W3DPO really worth $12 a plug? Is NGK a good alternative? Would the BPR6ES cook my pistons at Lime Rock in July? When will Pelican have the BP8EVX in stock? Thanks in advance. Jeff 89 930 Last edited by Turbo; 01-03-2002 at 12:24 AM.. |

Jeff,
The NGK '6' series is definitely too hot for a turbo! I have seen the 'ordinary' B-9ES recommended for a turbo elsewhere.

$12???!!! Count yourself lucky! I've just had the 60,000-mile service on my Alfa 156 2.0. Now the "great" thing about the spark plugs on the 156 is that they only need changing every 60,000 miles (fantastic, I hear you say!). The not-so-great news is that they are about £22 each (plus tax), and there are 8 of them. That's £200 just to change the spark plugs. After I recovered from paying for that, I realised I should have asked for the old ones back to mount on my mantelpiece as the Most Expensive Spark Plugs I have ever come across.
Still Smarting True Brit. |

Well ... there was a thread a few months back about the lunacy of $29 or so sparkplugs at a dealer!

Thanks Warren, I do believe you have the most replies in the old plug threads
and I was wondering if you would appear here. I ran across a PDF in the archives on NGK codes. I started reading through it and realized it would be winter again before I decided on the right plug. Maybe too much knowledge can be a bad thing .Wow True Brit, I can see why you're still smarting.....I don't know the conversion rate for the currency but that sure sounds like a lot of cash.
