Congratulations Lars, such impressive work as always. The car is beautiful. Hope to see the car in real life one day.

Please, please let me know.

Buy this one ! ?

Lars, amazing work, as always. Congratulations. I'm itching for a new project myself. Kicking myself a bit for getting rid of the 72...

Agreed. I'd rather buy Lars' car. We've all seen how much care has gone into the resto.

Duckworth 02-21-2014 04:34 AM

That's nice of you to say - but are you looking at spending in the ballpark of
$200g...or no ?

Kidasters 02-21-2014 03:45 PM

Me? Well, if I had 200K to spend, I'd buy an F430 to be honest.

billybek 02-22-2014 07:55 AM

Nice work!
My heart rate was up while reading the description of the first start...
Nothing like that first 30 seconds of run time on a fresh overhaul.

356RS 02-22-2014 02:14 PM

Nicely done Lars.

Long involved update...

Not really...we have winter here. I guess California got a bit too. You guys need it, we're ok and will graciously let you keep some of the water we would be selling back to you anyway. Our water tables are ok for the time being. Which means snow in the driveway. Our inaugural cars and coffee was the day after a major ice and snow dump that left me stuck up in the mountains. I am sorting tach (or non tach) issues.
I dug in and measured 56 times before I installed the passenger mirror. After looking at a number of posts relating to adding a passenger mirror, I decided to mount the mirror where it gave the best visibility to the driver. It was pretty close to the exact mounting dimensions suggested...and has some maneuverability. Oh pictures?
Not until the 65 degrees weather forecasted here materializes.

Oh, and the beast is not for sale. I am slowly learning to like the car...spring is coming. And depending on our relationship...maybe we get closer.

Although there is an RS stillborn clone nearby...that needs a 2.7-3.0 MFI engine...hmmmm

Awesome day in Colorado

Almost 60 degrees at my altitude...:) Driveway is a snowcone, but we have sun to the west
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393980483.jpg
And weather moving in from the east :(
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393980529.jpg
Supposed to get 7 inches of snow tonight...so time to make hay while I have daylight and it is warm. Grabbed the new "Dave Brown" targa top (not cheap) and set it inplace...amazing fit. The workmanship is unequalled (in my book)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393980717.jpg
The fit is flawless, and the inside is just as good as the outside. Backed the beast out of the garage and rolled up the windows...bath time. This thing is filthy.

Maybe I should have posted this under the "what I did to my car today" thread. I have a short window (45 minutes) before the weather is supposed to change. It felt great to get the shop grime off the car...easy way to drop weight.
Here we go...these should have been the first pics of the completed car

I have a passenger mirror..

Not sure Sorg gives a damn, but I am glad to get the shop grim off the new paint.

I need to get the car into some sun to allow the soft window to settle. You may not see the imperfections, but they are obvious to me

To me, the beauty of Gemini Blue it the paint's ability to change color depending on the available light, and the reflection of the sky (sounds a little esoteric for someone like me ...I know) which must be a function of the metal flakes in the paint itself.

I'm happy with how my BMW E30 sport seats turned out.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393982301.jpg
And the really good news is that I still have plenty of headroom as these seats are a "tidge" higher than the factory seats. I was worried about targa top clearance, but no issues there...and I am 5' 10". A set of re-worked E30 seats are very comfortable. I have forced (not really) a number of people to plant their butts and check out the comfort of these seats. Favorable responses from everybody. Trick would be for someone to figure out how to narrow the bases to sit lower to accommodate taller drivers. In the BMWs, these were bolted directly to the floor.
Lots more to do to sort out details...but that's what details are

couple things

Now that I have the carbs pretty sorted, I decided to force myself to re-sort them. As the engine is really a 2.4, I wanted to choke and jet them like the Zeniths on the euro 2.4 Ts which instead of a 115main and a 47.5 idle, they were 120 main and 50 idle. The 2.2 stock chokes were 27.5
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1397433782.jpg
and the euro 2.4 were 28.5 (yeah big jump, right?)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1397433871.jpg
So time to take apart a perfectly good set of carbs....
I couldn't find the parts stateside, had to buy them from Europe. But the seller had fair prices and shipped quickly. PM me if you want the contact info. The chokes ended up being closer to 28.25 vs 28.5, but no big deal. Tearing down the carbs gave me a chance to check the accelerator jets/squirters when I swapped the chokes.
New chokes left side
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1397434146.jpg
And re-choked and re-jetted and closed up.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1397434667.jpg
I really wanted to fire it up and begin the re-balancing of the carbs, but there is a foot of spring snow outside...and I don't want to open the garage door. Hard work is done...it can wait.
Axle (911 R clone) and Sorgen "hangin".

I don't know what the deal with the blue cars has been recently. The 914-6 on the rotisserie is OEM blue also. I need to get some red and orange back into my life :D

I still have some electrical issues ....

But I love this car. Engine pulls more like my 2.7 than a 2.2 pushed to a 2.4. I still have a lot to do...re-index the right side adjustable spring plate, corner balance and align, adjust the valves and torque the heads, figure out why the tach isn't working...and the fuel sender. Drove it into town today and got a bunch of compliments. Top off and sunny day...whoohoo. I need to check my temp sender also as it looked to be running warm and I have my special proprietary "run cool" pulley setup going

Anyway worth the wait and the frustration of a psycho painter.

Well done .What year are those seats.

Recaro seats

The seats are Recaro (BMW E 30) sport seats. I bought them trashed from college students that wanted to replace them with racer seats. Not the same as the Recaro sort seats for the early Porsches. But, they have tilts built into the sliders, and I have the bolsters "beefed" up when I had them recovered with basket weave centers and perforated bolsters. The seat mount brackets are custom...and they sit about an inch higher, but they are very adjustable, comfortable, and I can easily put my gym bag on the back seat shelf as the seats tilt forward. Find 'em for $150, have them recovered for $500, make the brackets yourself. Great seats.
