So I have had some issues with my fuel gauge and tach
 

Basically they didn't want to work. I need a specific tach for the 70-71 era and I have sourced one. It "supposedly" works...but the outer bezel looks like crap....lots of surface rust. And the glass needs to be cleaned...on the inside. I usually send these out, but today I decided to try to disassemble it myself and clean it up. The needle and center are good, I just need to gently remove the bezel. It was slow work, but it came apart. I had figured the bezel was one piece, but alas it was two. Wire wheel and sanding, prime and paint. The glass cleaned up nicely. Hard to clean the inside of the glass with the instrument intact. :D
Yes it is an E tachometer, but no need for me to push the redline.

Fuel gauge was a different story. I checked the gauge out of the car and the needle bounced with power applied. Back in the car, no response. Disconnected the battery and pulled the sender out. Separated the shaft from the sender. Wow. My sender which is a float that slides up and down a center shaft was literally glued in place. It took a half hour to get rid of the crap that had affixed itself to the center shaft. You have to be careful not to damage the guide wire or the wires that send a signal...kind or like a rheostat...when you clean it. Looks like a very delicate mechanism, but hey, it lasted 40+ years. Once cleaned it was reassembled and installed, connect the battery. Key the ignition...and? Nothing.:(
Crap. Fortunately I had another sender, so I took the old one out and compared the devices. What I had missed during the cleaning of the first sender, was that next to the rheostat wires are little fingers that touch the wire as the float moves up and down the guide tube. They are tiny and on the first sender...they were probably swept away by the gunk. With the second sender cleaned, and fingers in place, I re-installed the sender. Connected the battery...keyed the ignition and?? Yeah!... we have half a tank of gas. Damn, what a PIA...but it is fixed and now I know how to fix the problem in the future. Not sure I even want to try to fix the missing fingers on the float. Maybe somebody makes a replacement float?

I know can focus my attention on the 914-6 on the rotisserie. I am finishing up the build of his 2.7 RS spec MFI engine. YeeHaa.
