Pretty attractive handbrake assembly...and where does this wire go?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366070793.jpg
The wire attaches to this piece of plastic behind the e-brake ratchet and goes to ground when the brake is pulled which illuminates the dash warning light. The grey overspray is from the etching primer wand that I dragged through the tunnel to seal it up. The rest of the debris is the grease from the factory and sand that found it's way into the tunnel from the sandblasting...this will all get freshened. Here is a better view of the wire attachment point

I want to get the tunnel finished. Everything needs attention...the e-brake, the cold start lever, the heater lever.
The e-brake was disgusting...looks better as do the engine crossbar supports.

The nylon contraption that enables the cold start lever to work...was shot. The new one installed, needed to be adjusted. This is the capture on the throttle cable that can be adjusted. The throw of the lever is not much more than 1/2 to 3/4s of an inch throw.

The problem with mixing early and later parts is compatibility

I am using later reinforced doors....with SWB door handles on the interior. The trigger for the SWB handles points up vs the later handles point down...I found this out earlier today. The door panels were due a week and a half ago. However, my upholsterer is obviously related to my painter...and the panels are "coming along", but not done. So...I need to get the hardware for the windows, and door latches in the doors.

This is the correct lock mechanism for the right door
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366595117.jpg
Left side is totally wrong...in fact I think it is actually the right side mechanism from a much later car...but we can work with it.

A new pivot is in order...modeled off the right side
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366595318.jpg

I hate it when a simple task to avoid something...

Becomes a much larger task. In this case it was not "avoiding" significant expense. My doors and windows are later SC parts. Don't want power windows, so I had to settle on converting the early manual scissors to work with the later power window tracks. If I post the complex conversion it would help people backdating early cars, but it was a PIA. I would rather post the results. Not something the average shade tree mechanic will want to undergo, but as I couldn't find a thread detailing this conversion...maybe the details will help somebody. Let me know...it is all operational now and I wish I had stumbled on this thread...before I had to do it all from scratch.

Hey bro, Thx for posting this. Really! I was thinking about just exactly this subject on Friday nite LATE as I'm doing a backdate now and wondered 'do I use later or early doors and swap in guts'? What brought this to mind is I'm having an issue with the alarm going off in my SC driver (not the one I'm backdating) and was thinking hang a pr of 68 door that have manual cranks already or swap cranks into SC doors either way ill deal with the harness issues from SC to early and the factory alarms that are integroated into the harness so yes I'm very interested in swqpping early guts into later doors. Also the locking stuff, what and how to delete, if u did any picture taking or can impart ur knoledge I'd appreciate any and all help. Guessing its easier to leave harness and swap over cranks and internals and don't mess with factory alarm system which goes into fuel shut off ect. I would post it here for all but ill settle for pm'ing stuff to me. Regards and Thx for detail ur build.

Finishing up the doors

I have two sets of targa door tracks. I grabbed the pair with the lite green tint to the vent windows that match the door windows. After replacing the vent window seals...I realized that the chrome on the other set was better. Drats...so I switched and swapped parts to get decent chrome all the way around. The felt for the window channels came in (thanks host) and this was installed on the leading edge channel. The rear channel is a stubbie. The trailing edge of the window has a steel reinforced piece of plastic at the base, and I couldn't remember if the channel had felt or not. Clearly not many other people were knowledgeable in this area as I had plenty of views...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/748245-im-replacing-door-felt-need-measurement.html
But no replies. Turns out I was able to dig up and old thread on targas, and a similar question was asked...no felt at all in the rear channel. So with the mixed and matched pieces of the frankensteined vent window, and the rear window channel, we get the windows installed for good...or worse
I hate replacing the rubber window squeegee in the aluminum outer door top trim as the rubber gets tighter and tighter over time. All the rubber trim is installed and it fits...

Now would be a good time to cycle the regulators to see if I get full range of movement...fortunately so. I did have a small "issue" with my alignment holes for the regulator, the holes lined up perfectly for the window at exactly the TDC and wanted to pop out. I made a minor modification which will make it easier to remove them down the road should it be needed. I will post the mod shortly.

A pillar resto...PIA

The factory inside vinyl trim for the A pillar /windshield was barely good enough for a pattern. This needs to be done before the replacement targa top (expensive) rubber molding is installed. And before the door gasket gets installed. For you welders and engine builders...skip this part. If you send your projects to the local upholsterer (as you should because they do a better job than I do), skip this part. This voyage for me is always time consuming and measure-cut-fit, measure-cut-fit. The vinyl sized and sewed

Trying to work from the front of the car to the back. The targa rubber is a bit more expensive than the coupe rubber for obvious reasons...(Haycait feel free to weigh in here), targas have a propensity to leak. My dash looks great...

Until you turn it upside down. I don't remember it missing studs, but in fact it is missing a couple...in fact nine studs are missing.
Seven here...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368578916.jpg
And two here...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368579013.jpg
And I think these are the missing clips/studs that go here, but I can't see how to reattach them. They would have been installed on the steel dash before it was covered.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368579132.jpg
So for the seven missing studs on the backside, I turned a some bolts down to exactly fit the holes.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368579286.jpg
It is a tight fit. With some JB weld behind and on top, they should stay snug
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368579459.jpg
The two over the instrument cluster have square holes. I need to approach these differently. Nothing to wedge them against. Elevator bolts to the rescue. If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368579588.jpg
I trimmed these up to be rectangular and slightly longer than the square hole so that I could wedge them into the square hole, center them and then rotate them 45 degrees so that the corners catch the flat sides of the square holes. Trial fit looked good, so I removed them and filled the pocket with JB weld and reinserted the bolts, rotated and added some JB weld frosting to the top. These won't move.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368579959.jpg
Restudded
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368580227.jpg
I erred on the side of longer studs, so when I next trial fit the dash...I may need to shorten the studs. I can do that. Tough to go the other direction. Finishing up the rear B pillar trim on the drivers side

How not to repair/replace door mirrors....or well I guess they did work for a while

I guess the cars came over with one mirror as standard issue and as an option you could order a passenger side mirror. I like being able to see behind me or along side, so I sourced a second mirror for the passenger side. Housing looked good, mirror was crap.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368833679.jpg
The drivers side didn't look much better. New repops are $75-100. I called around to glass shops and the first shop wanted $40 to cut a new mirror...hmm at that price, the repop might be the way to go. I called a second shop and the price was $7.50...note to self, stay away from first shop. Took a mirror into the shop so they could both measure and confirm pricing. Better news, yes the shop could cut the exact size...price change though $6.50 per mirror :D So I paid in advance and waited three days (same amount of time I would have had to wait if I had ordered repops).
Picked up the mirror glass today and as promised, both pieces were cut and the otherwise sharp edges nicely beveled. Now to get the glass out of the first one. Looks to have been glued or silicone in place and as I didn't want to destroy the rim or surround by prying it out...I figured I would break the glass and remove the smaller pieces.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368834303.jpg
But wait...there is another layer of glass under this one
Yer kidding me. The replacement glass was glued over the top of the old glass? No way.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368834448.jpg
What a cheeseball repair. I really hope that a shop didn't do this. Makes about as much sense as glueing another windshield over your existing when it cracks due to a rock chip

speedo 05-17-2013 05:08 PM

There is a better (right) way

Not that all repairs need to be done right...what am I thinking.

The correct way to take these apart is to work an exacto knife blade around the circumference of the mirror between the metal edge and the plastic surround. Being patient and careful, the plastic surround will pop out releasing the mirror.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368834640.jpg
There is a thin rubber gasket behind the mirror that seperates it from the metal of the mirror that needs to be glued in place
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1368834720.jpg
And the new mirror was missing an attachment bolt that is slotted. I'll just slot one myself

Mirror location

So my mirror holes were welded up prior to paint. I believe the two different size Durants (swb to lwb) have the same size bases and gaskets. I know the drivers and passenger mirrors were in different locations. Would someone with Durant mirror be so kind as to snap a picture of their driver's mirror, and measure down from the door top to the center of the mirror 's horizontal axis, and the same fro a relative forward point as the door starts to curve down...measure back from that point on the door to the front of the base. I would greatly appreciate it. I know the passenger mirror is moved further back...but I think if I have the vertical location down from the door top edge...I can adjust the horizontal position by moving it to where I can see it through the passenger vent window. Unless of course, someone has the exact measurement :D

Lars, I'm not positive but I think the mirrors are different bolt patterns. My 66 mirror holes DO NOT match up to those on my 68 large head Durrant mirror. Kenik is sending me an early mirror and once I get it I can give you comparison if no one has answered your question by then. Thanks

You should be able to look through the door shell and see the mounts. Possibly even take a pick or a drift and mark the location. Then go topside and redrill.

Thanks Eric...
May not be so easy as these were SC doors and both the mounting holes and positions for those big flag mirrors are not the same. Someone measuring relative position off their 70-71 door would help the most.
Anyone able to go outside and measure off their car?

Here are a few photos from my '71.
Hope this is of use. Love the project.

And my mirror glass really could use a replacement so I'm very pleased to see an example of how this is done. Thanks!

Scored some goodies yesterday

I needed to replace my rear side panels with the correct panels to use with retractor belts...local source had some I wanted to look at. Another local source had some parts that were left over from his 67 S SWT and I figured I would circle back around and see what he had. It would also give me a chance to take some pics of his almost completed car to see how things look in final assembly. It was a road trip of sorts...but paid off handsomely. Got stuck in late Friday afternoon Denver traffic and the speed was slow, but my spirits were high. I need to go unload the truck and shoot some pics...:D

Unload the truck? Sounds like more than seat belt mounts followed you home.

BTW, took a look at my door handles. I'm missing the parts that you need. Mine are broken and gone, so we couldn't use them for a mold. Sorry.

speedo 05-25-2013 11:41 AM

Well it wasn't a truckload....

But it was loot...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369503424.jpg
Needed these because I'm adding 3 pt retractors
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369503513.jpg
And mine look like this
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369503547.jpg
PO at some point installed speakers and I had the option of recovering mine and creating a slot, or finding the correct panels with good upholstery and a slot already cut
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369503736.jpg
The seals may be useable, maybe not...never installed, but they might have been accidently cut...we'll see. These are what I needed...

SWT base trim. Phew, I wasn't sure I would ever find these, and nobody makes them any more. I'm getting closer. Targa bar cleaned up nicely
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369507212.jpg
But I have some studs to replace

Little disappointment

Test fit
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369508174.jpg
May as well trial fit the new slotted panels
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369508221.jpg
Bummer...makes the panel look pregnant. I'm guessing that I will have to reuse my old panels and use the small retractor housing used on the 72-73 targas, as this just isn't going to float
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369508196.jpg
One step forward and two steps back. Ok, another road trip to swap panels and grab some of the correct housings. Meanwhile I can get the retractors dialed in. There is a locator pin on the backside to orient the mechanism correctly. This needs to be drilled
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369507830.jpg

On to the outer mirrors. While at the softies shop yesterday, I did a tracing of the mirror position
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369507906.jpg
This will help me dial in the approximate location to drill.

Jonesing to get the rear window done...

Curtisaa is helping me with psychological and technical help. I hate having to undo something that I rushed to do only to find out that the next procedure is going to be really difficult...because I rushed to complete the previous step. The targa bar needs to be repaired...ground away the old studs
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369617329.jpg
Created the new studs
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369617358.jpg
Test fit...looks good

Ready to go

Looking good Lars. I passed on a 68SWT a couple of years ago. I had always kicked myself for that, but seeing all the work you are doing I am not saw angry at myself ;).

speedo 05-27-2013 12:25 PM

I could use a picture...a contorted picture

Of looking up at the back of the targa bar...while laying in the back seat. I need this to figure out how to trim my targa bar interior upholstery to accommodate the SWT latches. Or on the other hand if someone actually has this upholstery out of the car, that would be a much easier picture to take. Here is what mine looks like, and I need to trim to be able to access these.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369682124.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369682162.jpg
Instead of just hacking away at them, it would be nice to see what the factory did to differentiate the SWT from the hard window.
On a different note...
Treating myself to some woodie choices, VDM, Nardie or Momo.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369682524.jpg
I'm liking the Nardie look...smaller and simpler. Hey, car's got a wood shifter, they can be pals :D

This no, car hasn't been THAT much of a pain...just a classic OSFTSB
