Looking very good, I really enjoy your ingenuity and thought process as it translates to fabrication.
I like that last wheel pictured, beautiful wood and detail...they only look correct on that period of P cars.

My 87 Targa will be in the shop for another month or so just when the driving season in Northeast Ohio is kicking in. This fantastic thread reminds me to be patient. What a creative and skilled craftsman you are. Inspiring! Subscribed. Like someone said early, can't wait to see the Gemini Blue Targa on the road and humming with the 2.2 liter.

Sorting out some details

Rear shelf, crescent trim at the edge of the rear shelf, and the side trim all need some clarification as to whether the hard window stuff will work with the soft window. My new front targa windshield-top gasket (thanks Dan at CarsInc) and 72 belt retractor covers (thanks slcarr) arrived today. Yves (freezing14) has also helped out with an installation procedure. With a bit of luck, this will go together this weekend. I am still needing a good understanding as to how the targa bar headliner is clearanced for the latches. Hoping some pics will surface. There are three different SWT headliners (mine is the latest) and I don't want to screw up modifying mine. I called Stoddard today and the SWT headliner stuff... very NLA. So I will have one chance to modify mine correctly.

Going to be a busy weekend...

These arrived...yeehaw
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370045205.jpg
72-73 regulator covers. They go here.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370050998.jpg
That means these need to be recovered to eliminate the speaker holes
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370051109.jpg
I need to strip the outer upholstery and see what the cardboard panels look like behind
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370051381.jpg
Very attractive...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370051447.jpg
So these need to be re-created. I strip off the existing speaker-perforated vinyl
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370051668.jpg
These are in great shape...I will offer them up after I make my blanks.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370051884.jpg
Question...why is there a seam here

I create problems...unecessarily

I didn't look closely at the regulator housings when I got them...but they will not trim correctly with the 70-71 side panels
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370133579.jpg
Either these are from a coupe which has a shaped cover for the area behind this, or the 72-73 targas have different side panels. I could hack these up to get them to work...or figure out a plan B that gets along without them. I need to make the side panels anyway so I will hit them first. Cutting the vinyl and the foam

Marking for the pleats
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370133784.jpg
Sewed up
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370133823.jpg
I used some extra material from some old mis-cut door panels and my electric shear
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370133902.jpg
All trimmed to fit
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370133929.jpg

First one done and fitment looks great
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370134012.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370134039.jpg
How do I deal with covering these up...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370134115.jpg
The recess in the wall is not deep enough for the panel to lay flat, nor is it flat enough to just mount the regulator on the outside such that it is visible. Hmmm,
Need to think this one through. I thought about hammering the recess deeper, and also maybe hammering it back flat so that I could mount it on the outside. Both seem to be amateurish options. I have a better idea...

speedo 06-01-2013 09:12 PM

Maybe I can use the panel..

And no regulator cover. I measure the belt movement
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370145618.jpg
And try to scribe where the belt wants to be..
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370145727.jpg
I measured for the bezel and reinstalled
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370145837.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370145868.jpg
I now need to notch the interior trim for the handles
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370145946.jpg
And renew the vent screen...these are acceptable...but look like crap.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370146070.jpg

I need to figure out how to notch the interior trim for the latches

I am going to need some help here...

I feel like a dog getting ready to lie down...

....and he circles the spot three times before lying down. On another thread I learned that there are actually four different types or targa bar headliners. Three soft window and at least one hard window. The good news is that I don't need to be troubled by having to pick and chose one of the soft versions...bad news is that I only have a hard version. I will have one try to get this right
So like the adage measure four times, cut once...I installed and uninstalled this thing repeatedly to get my measurements correct...where to start?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370216391.jpg
Well as I may be able to re-use the vinyl, I should scalp this guy first...carefully
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370216486.jpg
Measure and re-measure then re-re-measure
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370216552.jpg
Steady hand to make the cuts
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370216595.jpg
I am going to do one side first. If I screw up, then...maybe I can fix it, learn from my mistake and not botch the other side...I feel like this is the point of no return, and I understand why high-end upholsterers commands the big bucks
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370216701.jpg
I check the fit...hey this is going to work :D
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370216855.jpg
With the latch in place
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370216903.jpg
With renewed confidence...just kidding.... I attack the other side
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370217010.jpg
One more thing needs to be checked....

speedo 06-02-2013 05:14 PM

Actually two more...

The operation of the handles in the cutouts. Phew...passed
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370217468.jpg
Sacrificed. I'm really curious how these aluminum/foam shapes were manufactured by Porsche
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370217549.jpg
So now I need to develop a plan to recover this baby. I think I will trim out the side pieces and then slot the original vinyl and tighten it at the front of the cutout.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370217746.jpg
The old vinyl is in good shape...but hard and inflexible. I'll use the advantage of mother nature at 8100 ft to warm it up
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370217825.jpg
It loosened up enough to become somewhat pliable. I trimmed the cutouts and got ready for a trial refit
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370217977.jpg
So far so good
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370218026.jpg
I am very ok with how this came out
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370218068.jpg
One more unexpected hurdle...hurdled.
I am just going to prime the bows...they will be inside the vinyl from here on, no need to paint them
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370218172.jpg
I need to figure out these before I install the soft window. They cannot be installed after the headliner. And the headliner is basically done. I have a hole punch...but it likes paper not vinyl
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370218345.jpg
Anyway, latch receivers are painted, bows are primed...I am close to the soft window install :D

The first one is, what, you can actually fix that, you have an incredible talent, secondly, why not, refers to, why are you not my neighbour (Hahaha!!) and lastly, how come you got all the talent and left none for me, just kidding but you do have incredible talents, so Congratulations on everything !! Ah the crescent...

At the rear edge of the shelf cover, and under-lapping the cover, lays (not sure how this one could actually lay)a piece of plastic, trimmed in vinyl. It is secured to the shelf cover and butts up against the rear window. I am told it is the same part number for both the hard and soft window. No way to check until some work is done on this one
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481212.jpg
It is in really bad shape. Like a dried up snake that got run over a few times
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481291.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481497.jpg
As I don't have much experience flattening snakes (or plastic for that matter),
I approach it logically but with a chunk of trepidation
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481392.jpg
As mine is also conveniently broken at the center (weak spot) I will massage the halves first
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481554.jpg
And then work the two sides together. Major improvement with slowly applying heat and working the soft (very hot) plastic with gloves
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481597.jpg
Nice warped gap in the center to close.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481735.jpg
Things ended up pretty straight. I will need to glass the two sides together, but waaay better than when I started
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370481911.jpg
This, when returned to a single piece will get fitted to the rear shelf, re-upholstered and affixed to the shelf cover. So glad this car is going together soooo quickly...uugh.

67targa 06-11-2013 02:17 PM

Very inspirational. After going over your interior I decided to tackle mine rather than doing to a shop. I have a 67 softie and wish I could have helped with the inner targa bar piece that you notched, but I just found the thread while researching for the answer to another restoration question. I think you are doing a fine job and although many consider softies loud, leaky etc, I consider them an important part the Porsche story. I have a question regarding your dash. What thickness of foam did you use on the decking? Also on the rear quarter panels it looks like you used a plastic panel (ABS) as the base material plus 1/8" foam, is that correct?
Thx for the detail photography on this thread ,,it helps.

The dreaded rear shelf...

I was going to re-use this till Dave Brown (targa top expert known world over) came up to pick up my top and commented on my work so far...and suggested that using my old shelf would really be a low point in my resto. I pulled it all apart
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371604321.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371604348.jpg
He was right, as soon as I removed the vinyl, it fell apart. The duct tape is not for looks...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371604422.jpg
I have new waterproof cardboard and sew able foam
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371604477.jpg
My pattern
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371604527.jpg
The vinyl is cut....I need to spend some more time sewing in pleats
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371604698.jpg
Sort of good news... I found out from Dave Brown that my targa top (although it looked great) had some structural shortcomings. So I bought another core targa top off of the 912 registry for parts. I didn't realize that there were two variations of targa tops...67 up until 69 1/2 and then 69 1/2 -infinity. Well turns out the parts top I received was an early top with an aluminum frame vs the later magnesium frame. We are going to steal parts from the later top to rebuild the early top which would more likely have been found on a softie. A bit more work...but apparently the earlier tops also fit the windshield A pillar and windows better. I'm psyched.

Rear shelf and crescent

I think this is the hardest part of the interior. The crescent needed so much rehab, and the shelf needed to be recreated. I rehabed the crescent back to where it could be used.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371951544.jpg
The reinstalled vinyl that trims out the rear shelf
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371951665.jpg
Worked out well...now the attention goes to the shelf itself.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371951746.jpg
I need two hinged areas, the first is from the shelf to the seat back, and the second is from the seatback to the attach points at the seat back base
So I decided to create a flexible hinge and use remnants from old bike inner tubes http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371952031.jpg
I will score the cardboard with a razor to facilitate the hinge, then add a rubber backing to allow the hinge to move
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371952156.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371952194.jpg
Ok, that worked well...now I just need to get the shelf to flex to prepare the shelf for recovering...so far so good

shelf paper...sort of

I need to get the vinyl on the shelf but first the attachment of the crescent to the shelf is critical. There is no room for modification or adjustment once installed. Lots of assembly to fit , disassembly and trim ...and repeat, and repeat.
These are the pins that puncture and are secured to the shelf and then go through the crescent and are secured to the crescent with speednuts. They look like short roofing nails. In fact I needed to replace a couple and had to clip a few roofing nails.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372031807.jpg
Everyting has to line up perfectly and the pins are attached before the shelf get it's foam
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372031834.jpg
Lining things up...first set of speednuts securing the pins to the shelf
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372031863.jpg
This tab secures the bottom of the center of the shelf/seat back to the center hoop... shown next at the bottom of the horizontal
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372031883.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372031906.jpg
And I cannot forget to glue the foam seat buckets in ...before I go any further
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372031925.jpg
They look like they are covered in rust, but the color is just the old factory glue that pulled up with the seats.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372033093.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372033137.jpg
And voila...new shelf with crescent attached
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372033210.jpg
I am pleased...but it was a lot of work. Upholstery shops...the good ones are worth every penny. You just don't realize how much prep goes into the work before the install. Truly an art, learned through experience...not a science
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372033432.jpg
And temporarily installed for fitment.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372033887.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372033946.jpg
To this
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372034273.jpg

Then it comes back out for carpet installation. After the carpet, the shelf goes in for good, the softie gets installed, then the headliner, then side covers and side trim. Finally the targa cover, rear and front targa seals and then door seals. Yeah...this stuff just goes together by itself.

Incoming....

I am dealing with carpet issues...more on that later. This long weekend needs to be productive. I am going to go ahead and mount the front fenders and lights etc. Fortunately I set aside the front wiring harnesses...and remembered where I set them.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372897468.jpg
Kind of a bugger to get them installed correctly, but when they are seated, they aren't going anywhere
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372897536.jpg
And it is way easier to do this without the fenders being installed (or I should say almost impossible to do it after the fenders are installed)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372897623.jpg
Fender sealing tape in place
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372897662.jpg
A lack of the correct washers delays the fender install for a day...but I dreaded replacing the old heater ducting that exit the longitudinals and passes up through the firewall to the heater blower . New ducting...and wasn't as bad as I thought
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372897790.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372897820.jpg
My carpet set was worn in the rear seat area, and the replacement set I bought a year ago was in good condition...but when I did a thorough itemization of the parts...realized that it was missing some of the same rear parts that were bad on my original set.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372897996.jpg
Too late to go back to the seller and complain. My fault on this one. I'll add the original carpet to this replacement set and sell them as-is.
I can however work on the rear seat backs while waiting for the new carpet set to arrive.
These are in decent shape...vinyl is good (could be refreshed), but there is some corrosion on the attachment brackets.
I will recarpet the seat backs with fresh carpet, but these come off first
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372898504.jpg
The leather straps with snaps were so brittle they just crumbled in my hands...so I guess I will get to replace those while I am at it...grunt.

Ok, I need some sense of accomplishment...something big

And the fenders will do. First things first. I had a rusted out bolt on the right top door hinge that needed to be drilled out and re-tapped. Once that was done, I needed to install the strikers. I had to source later/newer strikers as mine were a bit worn
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372987778.jpg
I am always hesitant installing strikers when the lockpost has been replaced. A lot can go wrong and although you have "several degrees of adjustment" things can get ugly real quick. Fortunately my original measurements were decent and the strikers needed little adjustment to be dead on.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372989221.jpg
Once both strikers were adjusted to get the rear of the door gaps correct, time to move to the fenders...left side
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372989430.jpg
And right side ...hey it was raining when I brought the fender down from above. We are experiencing a pleasurable but rare afternoon monsoon season in the front range of Colorado...a bit of artistic license

I need to deal with hooking up the various wiring before getting to excited about installing headlights and turn signals...and then the front bumper. Hey, it's the first day of a four day weekend...whoohoo

I admire your energy level and continued commitment.

Edit, as I sit on my ass doing nothing......

Nice work. I'm just down the way in Denver, so I hope to see the car in person one day.

Ha! Good point. Ok, going to go work on the yard. Yea, it's not the 911, but it moves the 911 up the list a teeny bit if i get other things done.

Those dang seat back snaps...or, "while I'm waiting for my new carpet set to arrive"

Ashes to ashes...these turned to dust

I guess it makes sense as the rear shelf is typically an oven in a coupe. In a targa , we have more glass...ie the oven is bigger. Probably why my rear shelf and crescent were trash. Nothing left to this leather strap. I was thinking when I felt the leather initially that some oil might save it. It shattered before I had a chance. Forensic study...like piecing back together dinosaur bones
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1373069340.jpg
Two cobblers nails secure the straps on each seat back
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1373069471.jpg
I have some scraps of thick leather that should work
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1373069404.jpg
I had the tool that allows me to set the two halves of the snap

Test fit on the other side

I may need to move these when I adhesive the new seat backs with carpet, but overall that was easy...at least with the seats on a work bench, not in the back of the car.
So I was asked for the choke size for some webers that I sold recently and I couldn't tell if the close-up picture was going to be in focus...guess this is what you see right after you get sucked into the air horn of a weber at 7000 rpm

BTW...the chokes are 32s. :D

Got the carpet, but don't feel like a carpet layer...today

Also received the parts I needed to install the fuel filler neck. May as well knock that out and finish up the fuel filler "apartment".

Of course when you are "in the moment" things go together as planned. Get out of the moment and you do the same thing three times to get it right. I installed the rubber cuff, and the filler neck with the hard wire strip that holds the cuff in place. Whoops, forgot the foam donut that seats the steel filler neck against the inner fender wall. Ok, remove, slide the donut over the filler neck and re-install. Crap, the support that holds the gas pump nozzle firmly in the filler neck was cracked on one side. Hmmm, blow it off or fix it. Fix it...so I dis-assembled everything again and welded both sides of the support. This is before using the Dremel to treat the welds.

Re-install a third time (remember the in the moment vs out of the moment thing...) and tighten everything back up.

Much better. Now I don't need to worry about the gas pump support breaking loose and sliding down into the gas tank...that would suck. Freshly plated tank cap with a new cork gasket is happy.

Expansion tank is next...

But it has seen better days.

Time for a swim, I can't install it looking like this. In you go...

After some elbow grease, the road crap came loose

Restored strap
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1375577459.jpg
Installed and plumbed with fresh tubing and clamps

Filler drain tube gets cleaned up and installed in the new rubber filler cuff.

I think I am done with the fuel system at least on the front of the car for now.
I deserve some bling...so bling is next :D
