took my non-matching door tumblers to locksmith, ignition key and key blanks. told them to:
1 cut the key blanks to the ignition key. 2 reset the tumblers to the newly cut keys. now instead of having 2 different keys to the door handles and the ignition and a passneger door i could not unlock from the outside, i have a 1 key system that works for everything. $17.50 per tumbler. all taken care of during a lunch break. bob 68 911L with a one key system ![]() |

I like to think of my "two key" set-up as a sort of Theft deterant system.
I keep a spare door key in a magnetic holder in a super secret location under the car. Then I have my ignition key hidden somewhere inside the car (no not above the sunvisor). Fool proof, most certainly not. hell a pro doesn't need a key, but some teeny boppin' punk kid who finds my exterior key will be disapointed to find that it doesn't fit in the ignition!

for a quick fix, remove the tumbler from the handle, insert the key you want to use and grind/file off the tumblers that stick out. test fit until it turns easily. 5 minutes and still time for lunch.

rob911 - apparently you have to file them a bit even if you use new pins. i am giving them my vin no. and they are supplying a brand new barrel (matching the good original one i have) and 2 keys for £52 + vat. they also supply the key heads with crest and torch for £11 ea.
i just think if you file them they will be less secure. looks like project 76 is a no-go then. its probably cheaper and easier to buy a new lock. i have been unable to find rekey "kits" (wayne suggested secondhand). richard ![]() Last edited by dickster; 01-28-2002 at 12:18 AM.. |
