Project costs

Quote:
#1 rule of Porsche ownership is never add up all the receipts
#2 rule is that if you missed the first rule, never post said total on the internet
Some of the responses to this thread are witty & quite humourous. At this point in time, my project is more about the journey of the restoration process complete with its attendant costs. Now I have 'officially retired', I hope to spend a lot more time & probably a lot more money on it. Maybe I should take Tom's advice & add Stephan's book plus Wayne's 101 Projects (a coffee table copy) to replace the greasy, shopworn one I have.

Cheers
JB

I sort of fell into another copy of 101 Projects. My son sent me one for Father's Day plus The Gold Plated PORSCHE, so I had an instant bed-side table copy!

I never let the wish list get long. I just order the stuff. I don’t total the parts.

I keep accurate records of my spending in Quicken. I once ran a report on what I spent on lunch and I deleted that report. I don’t want to know my Pelican total.

I don't think Daddyglen is asking how much you have spent. I think he wants to know how much you need to spend to complete your "wish list".

Daddyglen the "wish list" is a living document which will never be completed!!!!!

I agree-never total your past purchases. Could lead to many arguments w/ spouse or cause you to question your sanity.

Was cleaning out my emails and noticed a lot of PP order confirmation ones. Don't do it, I told myself. Don't total it up.

Well against my better judgement, I did. In 16 months of stewardship of my 86 coupe, I've got $1683.95. I could have spent that on blow and hookers but it wouldn't have given me nearly as much satisfaction.

If I were to put last years orders into a single project list it would be ++10-15K.

We need a thread on how big is your stack of pelican parts stickers

A long as my savings account balance is increasing and the bills are getting paid...

I have been recklessly spending since I got the car 2 years ago.

PO's receipts total $21k...mine are in a very good hiding place

Actually, I was talking about the "Project List" function on this site. I load it up with the parts I will need as I move through my rebuild and categorize it by phases. Makes ordering quick and easy. I also have a category for wish list items and another for that top end rebuild that looms in my future.

All total I am only a couple clicks away from $5,800. Of that about $1,300 is wish list/Top end rebuild. So Pelican can count on at least another 4,800 of my dollars (yet to be earned) as I creep through my project.

I just throw the receipts in the Porsche file. I am building a list of stuff, mostly small, that I will have to order. Right now, I have spent $16.00 just for masking tape and a can of WD40

The Gold Plated Porsche is a great, quick read. One of those books that I couldn't put down!! Funny and very relevant!

"Actually, I was talking about the "Project List" function on this site."

Glenn - I knew what you meant. I find the Project List to be handy tool when I find an obscure part number or if I am just trolling through the forum and think "I should do that to my car", I can just pop the part into the Project List as a reminder.

The value on mine is toward the low-end right now - $1,400. Of course, that does not include any of the tranny rebuild parts a few years off in my future, so the real value should probably be around $3,500.
