Chastised for not using search... but it doesn't work properly??

Hello all,

I recently posted a new topic "amsoil vs redline for G50 trans" which I thought was a fairly specific question and worthy of a thread. I recieved some good recommendations and will be ordering some 75W90 NS Redline Oil for my trans.

I was however chastised by IM and told to "use the SEARCH".

I use the search but I have trouble with it. For example, if I search "AMSOIL 20W50" I get any thread that contains the words amsoil OR 20W50. So it's hard to narrow results down.

I would expect "AMSOIL 20W50" (with the quotes) in the search would return very few results and I could hone in on the information I need, but instead it points me to THE oil post. You know the one, with 1500 posts?

Sorry bout this, yeah I'm a new guy but I'm usually pretty good with this 'puter stuff. And I really don't want to come across as critical or ungrateful, just would like to help.

there are several ways to get better results
use + between separate words
use * as a wildcard where applicable
use quotes around separate words that must appear together
search w/ a specific user name if you can narrow it down to a specific poster

Did you search "Chastised" before you posted this?

J/K. If everyone searched before posting, there would be very little activity here. I'd wager virtually every 911 issue has been addressed here before.

Welcome to the board.

This post made me go hmmmm

amsoil+20w50 OR amsoil 20w50 return the same results. Basically either word.

"amsoil 20w50" will return EXACTLY that. You can ask for the post or the entire thread that contains the post.

I learned something. Thanks Bill and Jonny

If you want to do a search like the one you mentioned above you would need something like

"amsoil 20w50" redline G50. You can search by post titles only and if that doesn't return anything expand to individual posts. If that kind of search doesn't get you anything then post away. People can choose whether to respond or not.

Not correct. Go ahead and try it. That's my problem. If the search worked properly it might be more useful?

I agree. This search engine could certainly be improved. People should not need to be computer experts in order to crack the code on search parameters.

agreed, sometimes when users reply "use the search" they are indeed being condescending, but many times they are merely pointing out the wealth of information that is already there for the reading.

I've had very little luck with the Search feature and it's not just on this board. But, I got a few tips from one poster and will try them. I promise.

I agree, using quotes does not work.

I too have been frustrated by the search feature on this otherwise fantastic board.

So maybe I'm nitpicking.

Maybe the software program used here does not have the capability?

I will point out that on evilbay when you search for say, fuchs 16, with no quotes. You only get results that have Fuchs and 16. Not every post with Fuchs and every post that has 16.

Another hmmmm. I was going by what was identified as the search words.

a b and a+b show the same thing. Essentially a or b.

"a b" shows "a b" as the search word but in fact returns a or b. First one that turned up had both so I ASSumed...

Sorry.

Exactly. But you're also right, it's a fantastic place to hang out. And really I wasn't chastised TOO badly. It was actually a well meaning reply and I am thankful.

Those work in Google. They don't work here. I've tried.

The search rarely works for me. Its the one area where improvement is needed imho. Its always annoying to me when guys say "search" when in fact it rarely really works...

Between this forum and 914world.com, the search engines are horrible - before I was never finding what I wanted and was posting stupid questions. I now use google. "site:forums.pelicanparts.com AMSOIL 20W50"

Everyone gets chastised here at some point in time. You need a thick skin and if you really want to get abused visit PARF. Other than that, the place is great and very entertaining.

You forgot the point of your post, both oils are not good. This is why you received little if any results from your quarry. Why deveate from what the owners manual says? Also, read your post there are a lot of very knowledgeable people replyed and yes some recommended some oil threads to check out. I hardly consider that a a$$ chewing or chastising.

Querry, quarry that's a spell check function (search for that).
See, thick skin required.

Also if you look in the pelican users manual on page 4.45 it states "slack shall not be granted just because someone has a g-50 transmission or is new". Just following rules.

Interestingly, I did a search on Jonny042 as my wife wanted to watch the movie "Frankie and Johnny." I was surprised with the result as it came back with "chastised for typing in Amsoil 20w50!" Even more crazy, there was link to Netflix that had a "watch it now" documentary which identifand all the message board challenged people in the lower 48 states!

Seriously, I can never seem to find what I am looking for when searching and have just decided to take my licks for duplicate postings from the people who's IQ's are significantly higher than mine (>56.) If google got ahold of the message board forums, they might turn into a highly successful company..........oh, wait a minute.
