Is it the external voltage regulator??
I have a 75 911s targa. Generator light stays on while running.
12.5v at battery when off and no change once started at 1krpm and 2krpm New battery and all earths at battery and at left rear are free from rust and shiny. Would expect it to be alternator - but red warning light flashes on the fuel gauge even though gas tank 3/4 full and needle shows 3/4 and the seatbelt relay buzzes if the passenger seatbelt is left unconnected. Really want this to be the voltage regulator @$40 rather than the hassle of getting to the alternator. What are your thoughts?? |

Sounds like the regulator.
Do you still have the external regulator? If the alternator was replaced in the last 20 years, most replacements available had internal regulators and the external one was removed or disconnected. A bad regulator can cause other electrical problems. |

remove alternator and vr
an alternator shop prefers to have them both to check so take them out and have them checked.
If you alternator is shot, I recommend getting your 75 rebuilt as you know it will fit the housing. I have a 5R housing and the rebuilt alternator i purchased would not fit. I have found that their are 2 different size 5r fan housings. One has a thicker flange where the alternator connects than the other one. For your information the original alternator uses pressed diodes, where-as the replacement rebuilds use loose soldered diodes. Have the shop use the pressed ones. The shop i use is in pittsburgh and is Stellar generator, he does nice work and knows his stuff. No affilliation with him.
