I don't have a Hammer and trying to diagnose....

All of a sudden my 93, 3.6 won't start....I'm thinking it might be the crank position sensor. I don't want to buy a part I don't need.

The engine cranks, does a bit of a stutter when quick start is shot into the intake, I was cleaning the valve covers of seeping oil with spray solvent....might have hit the sensor....otherwise the engine just spins without starting.

I USED to have EASY access to a hammer but no more. Any troubleshooting ideas?

Yep.....fuel pump is running BTW, Sensor has had a bad connection in the engine bay, probably a good idea to replace it anyways....

My Porsche laptop is out for an update. If you haven't solved this by Thursday I'll be happy to lend a hand as best as I can.

with an ohmmeter at the plug, see if the sensor has an open circuit. no way you're just out of gas, eh? had one last week that the gauge showed 1/4 tank, but it was empty.

Don't you have OBD? Have you checked for codes?

No OBD, it's a transplant into an 83 SC.

Have you checked to see if the distributor belt is broken? First disconnect the primary ignition source plug (left side of engine compartment there are 2 plugs which supplies 12V voltage to coils for each bank of sparkplugs on the twin distributor). I do not mean the central spark plug leads on the center of each distributorcap. The belt is not broken if the engine starts up.

this is not the case most of the time. ive changed these belts many times. the car will still run on one ignition just not very well. best way to check belt is to put a timing light on each of the #1 wires and then #4( just in case the odd chance the belt broke with the bottom rotor facing #1). id start simple by jumping your dme relay. next i would check the hall sensor wire from the distributor, they sometimes crack or the wire can get pinched, especially in a "transplant" car. also there is no true way to test the reference mark sensor with an ohm meter. very rarely do they ever develop a problem with the internal coil. what goes wrong with them 90% of the time is that the magnets get weak. they have a lifespan even in low mile cars not from use but from age. do you have a pulse from the injectors? (noid light), if no i would say change the reference mark sensor, especially if it has never been changed

use a strong magnifying glass and check all the solder joints in the relay and the computer.

Always an important clue here, the last thing done before the malfunction. Loose wire somewhere......

I would try a new DME relay first if the one in the car is old. That's a $40 part that is main suspect in no start situation for the 964s. Have someone help you crank the engine with one spark plug out of the engine touching ground (caution!! do not hold the sparkplug as 45,000V potential in circuitry) to see if there is spark to that cylinder during cranking. If you have fuel and spark the car should fire up.

A DME relay is $23 for the 3.2 style that I have in my Timmins conversion. I just ordered two from our host.

BTW, anyway to test the one I have? It's the POS Hungarian one with the old style round pins.

pop the cover off and check the solder joints.
