My '66 911 Hot Rod

I got sick of waiting for my photographer to be free, so I took a few myself.

VERY nice! Only thing I would change (personal preference, not a critique) is the seats to old style buckets. Excellent car!!

Fully understand Rick, I wouldn't use the big originals either.. I like the replicas with the raised headrests, maybe corduroy inserts.. along those lines. Again, BEAUTIFUL car!

What size tires are you running? Are those 4.5" Fuchs?

Nice job on the car!

This reminds us again of how good looking the early 911s really were (and can be). Their pure, minimalist design/style is unfettered by flares and tails and spoilers, just the way Ferry intended them. The side stripes seem unnecessary; they only came on later cars and appear to have been more a marketing "feature" than anything else. Really, the basic car speaks for itself so well with out them! You must have thought a lot before adding them. Still, a striking car that takes (a supremely rewarding) effort to create...

I love the black wheels, It would'nt have anywhere near the bad guy, hot rod look without them. Nice job.

More pics would be nice.

I'm not used to seeing such an early car with blacked-out trim.

Easy on the eyes though.

Enjoy.

I've been toying with the idea of an absolutely clean front, no rubber or bumperettes for my 72 when I put it back together. You have me sold. I love the look. Great job.

Rick,

WOW,
Looks great.
I would be proud to get a ride.

Let me add a few ‘touches’ for consideration:

There is a black exhaust tip for ’74-> 911 that can be made to fit (and shorten the pipe slightly).

A plain-black license plate frame is available. (Too bad it doesn’t have a Ca black/orange plate. You can get a repro with ‘911’, etc.)

There are black wiper bezels and black antenna bezel parts available (used).

My eye likes the original chrome on the turn signal assemblies (F&R) and the door handle. You might try some water-soluble (pre-school) black on the horn grills and see if you like the effect (easy to wash off).

You might try the same on the outside mirror.

You might try some removable black tape on the front bumper and rear quarter-bumpers. I like your simplicity – just try and see.

Originally there was flat black paint on the door edges so the exterior color is not visible in the cockpit. All that takes is to remove the door panels, mask & paint.

There is an OE black anodized threshold plate from a ’73 that will fit (complete with black plastic rivets).

There are repro wood dash pieces. A ‘radio delete’ piece would match.

I like the ’69-’71 instruments. There is a ’68-only oil pressure gauge that matches, has 140-280 calibration and works with the early sender.

There is a 914-6GT steering wheel that is close to that size and accepts the normal ’65-’67 horn ‘ring’.

There is a ‘no markings’ shift knob from early cars.

I prefer the early accelerator pedal and always use OEM pads for the clutch and brake pedals my big feet....

The SC seats are great (and much safer). There is original (late ‘60s – early ‘70s) red/black/white houndstooth material available. That tends to look great as seat inserts.

I can’t see which tires and those do look like 4½x15 Fuchs. A black 6x16 fits and would allow more current tires (205/55x16) and look close to the same. The 7x16 can be made to squeeze in the rear.

Please take this as constructive suggestions and nothing other.
You have a wonderful 911.

NOW THE IMPORTANT PART:
What is underneath?

I have a well-sorted SWB that I ordered new.
Been there – done that: Suspension, brakes, tires/wheels, engine & trans.

We can help.

Best,
Grady

ricks234,

Thank you for the post. I love it! A photo of your ride will be in my garage as inspiration to finish my swb hotrod!
