Speedometer broken, but the odometer still works

Out for a drive today, and I noticed that my speedometer is pretty much stuck between 20 & 40mph. It travels really slowly between those two marks depending on car speed. At a stop light it'll drop to 20mph mark. Both odometers still work. Isn't this supposed to stop working the other way?

Thoughts?

FWIW, the speedometer was working when I left this morning, don't know exactly when it stopped working.....

Best guess, something busted inside....%^b

Pull it, mark the wiring as to what goes where and ship it to either Palo Alto or North Hollywood Speedometer for a rebuild.

If you feel the need, consider a new face on it and the others to modernize the look....

If your car is the one shown in the "garage", then you have a mechanical speedo. It could be the internals need cleaning to free up the movement of the needle/coil spring mechanism which responds to the spinning of the magnet attached to the cable from the trans. Whatever it is, it will require opening up the speedo which should be done by a professional shop, IMO.

Mine did the same thing the other day. So I "flinked" it on the glass(plastic?) and it started working again. But since my odo is broken as well, it will be going off to North Hollywood this winter.

So just try hitting the glass to see if that loosens anything up.
