Stupid Question, Fuse Block

Did the 3 fuse block in the engine compartment have a cover?? I checked the PP catalog & couldn't find one..

There's a cover for the whole fuse/relay panel. It's held on with two thumbscrews, one of which goes in that threaded hole next to the "08", and another directly above.

Don't know if pre '84 had a cover (911-610-105-04-OEM) - is the plate the same size?

edit - 03 part covers 75 up through MY 83, the 04 from 84 - 89.

This was discussed years ago on the Early S Registry. Apparently '71's did not come with a cover but the holes were there. The cover did change somewhere along that time period. Sorry, I don't have the specific info at this point. Somewhere along the line I stopped caring about the minutia.

Byron - get a cover; you may need to hog out the holes some to get it to fit

to save money, buy a used one
to waste money, buy that CF one

hose down the contacts with cleaner and/or "do a Warren EarlySman" on them

If you are talking about a cover for only the three fuses shown, that's different than a panel cover. I certainly have not seen all the 911's around by a long shot, but I have seen exactly one picture where there was a single, separate cover over just the three fuses shown in your picture. I can't recall where I saw it, maybe right here on Pelican, but the car was beautifully original and had the cover. I recall it because of the fact that I had never seen one before on any car! Bottom line, they seem to be rarer than hen's teeth, though someone familiar with early and completely original cars may be able to state how common they were.

I found it here on Pelican a few years back. I don't remember whose car it came from. I copied it to help me put mine back to stock.

I have owned two cars with the little cover. the last was a 71 911 T. I am pretty sure the 2 owner 67 912 also had one. It only fit one way because the screw was slightly off center and the the wire holes were 2 and 3. I was a bit irritated when the last two 911s did not have it and now I know the rest of the story. thanks Marlin

Resurrecting this ancient thread to ask…. What are these three fuses for??? In my particular case: in a 1971E.

On my '77, one was for the heater blower motor, and one was for the rear window defroster heat strips. The third would be for some other function which used a relay.

Thanks for that! I’m guessing the fuse box itself was there for several years and model iterations, and perhaps the fuses were put to different uses over time. What started me down this rabbit hole was noticing that mine has no cover but in other cars there is a cover. Perhaps Porsche simply didn’t put a cover on in the earlier years, as odd as that may seem to me.

In searching the internet I found something which may be potentially useful.

This document has what appears to be scans of “Wiring Diagram” pages from a longer document.

On the page labeled “Wiring Diagram Type 911E, 911 S”, marked SL 33 it says:

Rear fuse box
Shut-off solenoid (start) (Rear window wipers)
Shut-off solenoid (stop)
Rear window heating circuit

On the page labeled “Electric Wiring Diagram Type 911 T, 911 E, 911S”, marked SL 35, it says:

Fusebox III
1 (Sportomatic)
2 Stop magnet, solenoid valve, starting valve
3 Rear window heater

Then there are two pages marked SL 37 and SL 39, labeled “Electric wiring diagram (Part I) Type 911 T, 911E, 911 S, Model 71”, and “Electric wiring diagram (Part II) Type 911 T, 911E, 911 S, Model 71”

It may very well relate to the “cold start solenoid” or “fuel injection pump solenoid” in my MFI car (Note, I am not sure the “proper” name for it!).
