footwell blower problem

Hi,
I have an 84 carerra with the manual 3 speed switch for the footwell blowers and they were working fine the other day.Today i turn them on and they run for a split second and then turn off.The engine compartment blower works fine and all fuses are fine. You can keep pulling up the levers and pushing them back down and hear them run for a split second but they shut off.Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks
Jay

I expect they've seized!

This pretty much happens to every car at one time or another.

Have a look in the archives and you'll find quite a few threads on how to take them apart and grease them up again.

Good luck

I think you might need to clean the low voltage contacts in the heater relay, which is in the engine compartment. Buying a new one is really expensive. If you rev the engine, do they stay on?

Do a search under Footwell Blower Motor Fix.

Member ibeaudoin posted a great step by step fix
which worked well for me.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to paste a link
onto a thread.

Good luck,

Gerry

Do you have a non-OEM replacement motor on the engine blower?

I had this exact problem when I installed the replacement blower discussed in this thread...

Carrera replacement heater blower (long)

See post #65 for my theory. I replaced the Dayton motor with an OEM motor and everything worked fine.

If you have an OEM engine blower motor check and clean your ground connections. Pull the connector off the engine blower control unit (located on the electrical fuse/relay panel in the engine compartment) and clean the contacts (as Rusnak mentioned above).

If that doesn't help, see if you can borrow a (known good) engine blower control unit and install it to see if your control unit is bad. Try your control unit in the donor car too.

I don't think your problem is the footwell blowers themselves but you can check them by running power to them directly.
