spark plug wires and boots

Hello, does anyone have any recomendatioins for the best plug wires and boots out there that will get me the most hp/ best flow of current. Does not have to be oem or porsche specific. The car is being built for prc spec 911 with any single plug per cylinder ignition allowed. The boots and wires I have now are corroded so it seems to make sense that now would be a good time for me to replace them with something good. Also debating wether or not I should get an msd 6al2 programmable ignition system.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
scott

The new Clewetts are great, excellent fit easy install, and custom sets, colors, etc.

Clewett or Magnacor about the same price. The MSD is good but not as good as the Bosch unit. But I would go with that if you want a controllable unit. You can but two and have a back-up for the track.

Are you saying that the MSD 6al-2 programmable control is not as good as the stock 1980 bosch system or are you comparing the msd to a newer better bosch system that you can buy now? I dont think that the system in my car has ever been replaced. Do these ignition contol units age? thanks

No, the Bosch is the best, in it's day. There still operating 40+ years after they were manufactured. But they get oil and components brake down over time and corrosion weakens the solder. I do think the MSD is a good unit and being new, a much improved unit, they have been known to fail quickly but most things made today do. Not sure you can get anything newer from that's better than the MSD for the money. I'm running the 6al with the 8.5 magnicor's The spark will bridge a 2" gap in free air!!! scary stuff!!! I think you will be fine with that set up if it is OK with the rules of the class your running.

+1 on the MSD.

I've been running the MSD 6A for quite a few years now. Works great with absolutely no down time.

Regards,

Al

+2 on the MSD. Running a Mallory VI A unit as opposed to the "MSD" name-brand. No probs, no downtime, little better emissions. I'd rather have something with 20 years newer development over the original 80's era equipment, regardless of how awesome it was in it's heyday.

As for plug wire recommendation... I'm running the 8.5mm magnecores and they work just dandy. Although, those Clewitts are lookin' pretty fancy.

I have Clewetts on one car and Magnacores on the other.

Clewetts are a plus because of the numbering on the distrib end, but a minus (IMO) because the braided jacket is hard to clean and can rip.

Magnacores are a plus because they are very flexible and easy to clean, a minus because sometimes the dust shield melts and shrinks.

Magnacores do 8.5 mm or even 7mm.

Hi,

I am the odd guy here - I replaced my wires with Beru's. They are a perfect fit and my first set lasted 29 years and 122000 miles. So, I think they are quality product that fits perfectly and I like the look of the stainless braid.

They are available from our host for $180 - Just a little more than the Clewett's.

The change in my engine performance after I changed out the wires was amazing - that being said, I also did the spark plugs - rotor - distributor cap and coil.

Does anyone know the porsche 1980 911 sc distributor terminal ends type?

Also, do straight boots work on a 911 engine going to the spark plugs?

I may try to get a set of Accel universal wires 8mm, spiral core with straight boots and cut them to fit my car (with an MSD coil and ignition). But im not sure how good of quality they are and im not going to buy them if they wont do the job well. Has anyone used them?

Thanks
Scott
