Speedometer removal

Hi

I am going to send my speedometer to north hollywood speedometer for a conversion from a mph to a kph, due to the fact that Norwegian authorities will not put a plate on a car with mph speedometer.

Not much of mechanic but I need some guidelines on how to get the speedo out of the dash. I am looking for a link which describes the process. ????

Grip the edges and wiggle it out, it's just held in by a rubber gasket.

It's just a press fit.
Use something to pry under the lip and wiggle it out. Make sure to mark all connections for reassembly.

SVA-
I second the above comments. First grip the speedo firmly & just wiggle it out, if it's to stuck to come out use a plastic putty knife or a paint stick/stir to get it moving. Get yourself a note book draw a circle on it and document the wire colors & position, whatever makes sence to you should work.

Hei SVA,

Just ordered 2 sets of face plates in KM/H from NHspeedometers. I'm also Norwegian.
You do not have to send away the whole speedometer if you only want to pass the registration. Just replace the face plate.
Seems like there is different way of handling things at the DMV. I have registered 2 930's with MPH speedometers whitout any problems, but wanted in KM/H for easier to follow speed limit :-)

Easy to change yourself

Easy to change the faceplate?? Did you forget to mention that it ain't just a matter of "popping" the bezel off? It seems to me to be the toughest part of taking a speedo apart, unless you don't care about scarring it to death....
Getting the speedo out is just a matter of continuing to pull (and twist left and right, but just a little); it'll come loose. Your fingers may get tired....be patient, you'll feel it starting to give.

If you are having trouble getting it out, try the tach and see if that'll come out so you can try and push the speedo from behind.

Or the clock, then push the speedo from rear, it is easier.

Remember, disconnect the battery!!!

I would just order the face plates, any speedo pro in Norway should be able to fix it for you for a small tribute.

Having experienced this, opening the speedo is not trivial and if you work the wrong way you may leave marks / traces inside which will upset you every time you look at it.

After a failed attempt I had to get another speedo, as it freaked me out. And now I am looking for yet another one, just so that I have spare.

It is indeed "not trivial". It takes a lot of time to slowly pry away at the edge of the outer bezel that wraps around the speedo body flange. Mainly just prying with a screwdriver tip (edit: or even a knife edge to get started) being careful not to slip out (which would scratch the outer rim), or slip/jab through to the inside, where you could damage the "glass". One cannot hurry this if they want to be able to put the assembly back in the dash without seeing damage. Edit: It appears to me that most of the accessible tiny "tabs" for prying up are along the back lower right and lower left. That is where one should be working to free the bezel.
I think it took me 45 minuutes or so, and I still repainted the "lip" that wraps over the flange after carefully crimping it back down, to hide little silvery bare metal areas along the rim, just in case they showed later. The thing will get light scratching and marking back there, but it should end up hidden by the rubber gasket. Takes time.
