Dry cell battery recommendation
I´m in the middle of a suspension pan replacement project. I´m thinking on getting one of those fancy drycell batteries (Optima). Don´t want to deal with rust in the battery area any more. This is the old battery info (66Ah, 510 A).
Locally I found an Optima red top, model SC75U, CA 910,CCA 720, RC 90. Is this battery OK for my car (911 carrera, year 1985)? Using the forum search tool I found recommendations for a different model of Red top Optima battery (34U or 75/35). Thanks Miguel |

Why not ask Optima? Import Car Performance: Ask The Pro Look for Ask a Pro and send an e-mail
FWIW: I use a Red Top which I bought at Costo and it is fantastic. No worries about battery acid.

Look at Braille batteries. Much smaller and lighter than the clunky Optima. Same advantages.

Deka manufactures the batteries for Braille and sells them for close to half the cost. I replaced my interstate and saved over 20 lbs in front.
They are a glassmat battery similar to Optima & Oddesy. Do a google search. There is an outfit out of Florida, family business and they will set you straight on which is best for your app...

There are alot of battery choices out there but the optima red top is readily available and does a great job. You might have to make a little adaptor out of a plastic cutting board but it fits great. If you do a search here there is a template. With some cars they bolt right in. In my 91 it fit in the original mounting plate , on my 73 it was a bit trickier, your 85 might be a straight exchange.

Anyway, i went with Braille B2317 (17 lbs, 472 CCA), cost was $166, including the battery clamp you see below, from Jegs. I went with it based on one Pelican's recommendation, he said he had it over a year and it worked fine. I have started my car exactly one time with the new battery because I had to build a battery holder for it. That's what I did over the TG holiday. ![]() Now I need to install it. The plate is 5 x 13 x 3/16. One end will wedge into the 5" wide slot where the rear of the battery goes, and on the other end I will drill a hole to be able to use the normal tie down bolt. I put 3/8" dense foam tape (such as you see between the battery and the channel) on the bottom of the plate to protect the paint. |

i used to swear by optima batteries but their quality, imho, has gone down considerably in the last few years but their prices have gone up. i prefer kinetik batteries simply based on my own experiences, which have all been stellar. i replaced the giant old lead-acid diehard in my SC with an hc800 and i have been very happy.

See here: Poor Man's Lightweight Battery
I've had one of these for a couple of years now. As long as it's above about 35 degrees it works just great. I keep in on a battery tender during the winter, as I don't drive my car daily. I've got mine mounted in the stock battery box of my '70E, driver's side. Fits with room to spare. Cheap. Light. Effective. Inconspicuous. It cranks a 2.5SS with 9.7:1 CR, using a gear reduction starter. I think I paid about $70 for mine, including shipping.

The Deka is Extreme Sports/ ETX 14 - We made a cradle for it, mounts really clean. I paid $76.00 plus tax for battery.

We used to use Optima but the quality isnt the same as the older product. We now use Kenetic batteries at the shop. Very efficient batteries. They charge in no time and dont hold a memory like others. A little more money though.

I replaced my 3 year old Optima red-top this summer with a new one.
Four weeks ago I forgot to plug my car into the trickle charger and now the new Optima will not charge. Now I'm pissed and will be going with something else. jetstar: What Kenetic battery is suitable for a daily driver 911?

Don't give up on the battery just yet. it might not be charging due to the charger not the battery. Read up a bit on chargers and be sure you have a charger that can see and start a charge on a dead jell cell plate battery. Some chargers see a discharged jell cell as a short. Some batteries need to be conditioned prior to recharging if they go below a certain % of charge.
