Help - Carrera Chain Tensioner Problem

Hi gang,

I have oil weeping from my right chain housing cover at the chain tensioner oil line hollow bolt nozzle - see picture (hope it worked - my first attempt attaching a pic). I have replaced the oil seal washers and the leak persists.

My questions:
1. Should I drive the car - is there danger of the tensioner not functioning properly?
2. What is the best fix? Just replace the cover or seal the crack?
3. What is the correct torque for the hollow bolt?

TIA,
Mike M

That looks like it could be the o-ring on the tensioner, which seals the chain cover and tensioner matting surfaces. If it is just a seep you probably could drive it for a while until you can pull the cover and replace the o-ring.I don't have my book handy but the torque can't be too much.Maybe someone else will chime in with some help too. Good luck Mike

The caption indicates a cracked fitting, but if that were the case the problem would be obvious and you wouldn't be asking. The picture is a little fuzzy so it's hard to say, but as I recollect the only way that oil can get to the outside is if there's a problem with the mating surfaces of the cover, the fitting, or the two washers. The O-ring seals the path that conducts oil to the tensioner, but a leak in that seal will stay within the housing. I'm going by memory here, so a look at an exploded view of this assembly is advised. Keep in mind that the oil feed is a fail-safe--there's still spring force in the tensioner, so I don't think there's any immediate danger.
