Noise reduction....Dynamat
Hi Everyone,
I am a first time Porsche owner. I just got my restored 930 and I love it!! But, my wife doesn't! She says it is too noisy. It's a performance car! Anyway, I am considering installing Dynamat all over including the door panels. Will this reduce the engine and road noise? I would also like to hear the stereo more...I instaled a good stereo. Any advise would really be appreciated. Thanks...it's my first post! |

my car is loaded with Dynamat and high end speakers and amp
it eliminates the high frequencies but it's still a loud muffler car if engine noise isn't an issue all you can do is eliminate the tin can sound and reduce engine mechanical noise through the rear bulkhead my bride hates it and would even if it was as quiet as a honda only my take

joefab,
Welcome to the board. Many here have tried to quiet down their ride only to be disappointed with the results. You can make these cars quieter but noise reduction equals weight. Dynamat (along with a product called Damplifier) dampens vibration, you do not need it all over the car. You'll want to appy it on bare metal panels and will really only need to cover about 25-50% of the area (doors, floors, etc). Your Porsche already has noise reduction mats that were installed at the factory, look under your carpets, they are also inside the doors. They're heavy and on the floor, possibly cracked and chipping. Also check the sound mat in the engine compartment - is it intact or falling apart? Some are missing entirely. You'll then have to follow that with some closed cell foam covering the entire area. That means the whole floor, rear parcel shelf, where ever you're trying to quiet down. From the factory Porsche installed large, heavy mats behind and under the rear seats for noise reduction coming from the engine, transmission and rear wheel area. Over the closed cell foam you ought to apply a barrier, the best being MLV or mass loaded vinyl, also pretty heavy. Along with all this stuff is closing up any and all gaps and holes that allow noise to find its way inside the cabin. Try a search here and see 'jhubs' (and others) extensive project to quiet down his 911. You can make you car quieter but it will take some effort. As Ronin mentioned, I have found that most of the noise in my car comes not from the muffler but the mechanical noise of the engine (and transmission) itself. We'd also like to see a picture of your 930! Have fun...

there are tons of threads on this - search on sound noise attenuation ceramic dampening & combinations thereof
you will need to decide which noises she hates - she will be happy if you involve her in the process - it show you are paying attn to her get her up to a high speed and put the clutch in - ask if she hears any noises she doesn't like & explain that she is hearing wind & road noise (tires) with a turbo you can quickly achieve a speed high enuff to make her stop complaining about the noise |

I put it in my daughters vw cabriolet and all I can say is that for the stereo, it works awesome!! Not too much for road noise. Streetside auto online has the best price. Keep checking there site all the time and look at the special codes they have at the top of the page for even a better price. I got it when they had free shipping and I got each box for $116 shipped to my door with the special saying. Her car took almost 3 boxes

take a look at this thread. hopefully it will be a good guide for you. as stated anything more than 25-40% is just wasting time, money and effort for the damper (dynamat, etc). kns knows his stuff. the only point i would disagree with him would be the factory installed stuff. it is nothing more than asphalt sheeting which has minimal, if any, damping properties. it was use because 1) it was cheap and 2) it added mass to the panels which changed their relative frequency but did nothing to significantly stop noise.
it seems like everyone else has done it, so why not me... (interior)
