Need Shift Knob
I installed a short shift kit and all new shift bushings
this past week, but when I tried to put the shift knob back on with a new crush sleev, the bottom cracked open and now it won't stay one. It's a pity, too, because now it my 915 shifts very crisply - yes, I used 915 and crisp in the same sentence! The lower bushing on my old shifter was in bad shape, and the assembly shifter itself had some serious wear in it. I used the *factory* shift kit, which I like much better than the Weltmeister one. The factory kit replaces everything except the housing itself, the fasteners, and the 2 front plastic bushings; if you did this job, remember to buy those. Anyway, I need a new shift knob. I've done some scouting on the usual suspects web sites, and it seems the only options are ones made for guys named "Guide" with lots of chest hair and gold chains, or guys named "Brandon" with their caps on backwards and random Kanjii characters on their cars. I want something in Basic Black, without the make of said device's name on it. Any ideas?

Are you happy with the stock one (in terms of looks?).
Pelican has them: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_pedals_pg2.htm#item3 But that price huuuuuurts (for a plastic gear knob...). P-tax at its finest. Pelican also have Momo - I assume you don't like the styles??? http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/MISC/POR_MISC_moknob_main.htm I have an Anatomico on the '75 and although I like it I want a regular 915 pattern Porsche one. Then again I LIKE the 915 one a lot more. So I get to pay P-tax some time. Cam

If you've got a center console, you might consider a Wheelskins shift boot.
Otherwise, Pelican has some that are pretty simple.

I bought a OMP carbon fiber (look) knob several several years ago... (before I realized how tacky it was).. .and just got around to changing it out with a MOMO Combat knob with the burlwood insert to match my dash.
I like it... bit pricey...but....hey... I'm single!!!

check these out...I got one...the pearl knob...no neck I like the simplicity no frills...but I don't like the color....I think I am going to get the gunmetal grey at the bottom of the page Bob is a GREAT guy he doesn't make them for Porsches...but he did it custom for me and the price is pretty reasonable...and it fits with a OEM crush sleeve... Kinda reminds me of ferrari, lambo, lotus...just a big fat sphere... MJ |

I also have the Momo Anatomic and really love it.It does have the Momo name on it,but it is barely noticeable. It looks like Dino makes the same knob and I can't tell if their name is on the knob or not.

I have the Team Voodoo on my 'other' sports car- it's really nice, but cold in winter, hot in the summer. I put a clear coat on it to help insulate it, but it feels great in the hand. Mine is the Magnum size- I'm 6'1", with size 'large' hands, and it fits great.

don't you love the team voodoo knob???
I think it is perfect...nice weight to it as well... i think in an older car pre-SC the polished or pearl looks good... in my car I am gonna see if he can make a gunmetal colored one... I drove a miata in Hawaii with a voodoo knob and I came back and scoured the net till I found the right one...then pestered Bob till he had one made to fit the porsche shift shaft... |

I ended up ordering an Anatomico from PP. It was the least obtrusive of the bunch, without paying an arm and a leg for an OEM one.

Actually, I shouldn't poke fun. My wife's just had a baby, so naturally she comandeered my "other" car (a small SUV) and now I'm stuck driving her...MIATA! Not for long though. I'm too big, it's too " zoom-zoom-y for me.

jwetering, don't be cruel. We Miata owners have to deal with enough concerns about our masculinity... It's bad enough that Mazda's commercial shows an SUV kicking a** on a pack of Miatae, hurts almost as bad as the Saturn commercial that shows their little coupe beating up on P-cars. At least in the Saturn commercial, the Porsches blow past in the end.

Sorry Dave, I didn't mean to be cruel, As a male miata driver, I should be more sympathetic.
You know, when I first started driving "peanut" (as my wife calls it) I thought just maybe I could get past the masculinity issues and enjoy the car for what it is...a classic sporty twin cam roadster. For a few weeks, it was ok, but honest to god, I've never been treated so badly on the road as when I'm in that car. Everyone cuts me off, rednecks in pickups, housewives in minivans...you name it. That, coupled with the fact that I can't see traffic lights without craning me head over (I have a bad neck and back), has convinced me that I need a Jetta...or a Golf. That all said...the Miata was an instant classic. Thirty years from now we'll be looking at the last few remaining examples and thinking that maybe they weren't sop bad after all.

jwetering, I wasn't taking any offense, don't worry about it. I'm also an industrial designer, so I have to continually defend my masculinity... Maybe I should get me a darn gol' pickup truck-wait! I take it back! I'm sorry for even uttering the words on this board!
I didn't like them when they first came out, either, because I thought they were just a cheap ripoff of the Lotus Elan. Then, it occured to me- this is a reliable ripoff of a Lotus Elan! I understand your issues withhow you are treated on the road, though. Truck drivers suck.

Jack,
Can you provide any details on the gauge setup in your console? What make are the gauges? Is the mounting piece something you bought or custom made? I want to eventually put in a voltmeter and cylinder head temp gauge. I like the fact that only half of the storage area is blocked. Olivier

Oliver, the console was done by Dave Bouzaglou's shop here in L.A. It's not a complicated thing to fabricate -- a piece of aluminum with one bend, and two holes cut, basically. But making it vertical allows CDs to still fit in there.
I have a voltmeter and a transmission temp gauge in it. Both are VDO. The power window switch down below it raises and lowers my rear spoiler. The transmission temp gauge was an eye-opener. You don't imagine your tranny would be hotter than your engine, but on a track it can get there.

"I want something in Basic Black, without the

" -Thom Silly as it sounds, ever thought of going to any pool hall, selecting the ball you like the color of most (8 is black), drilling that sucker out, and shifting with a 2 1/4" diameter ball? Back in the early 60's, hot rodders did that. Bet it would still work. And thinking about it..when driving, you'd always be "behind the 8 ball".... BTW, pool balls today are all made of plastic. As light as, and surely warmer than, those made out of aluminum or carbon fiber for $$$$$$$$. Now...go smoke some more rice! |
