Engine Whine
Hello!
Recently my 1978 SC 3.0 has been making a terrible whining noise. It isn't the typical whine heard when the throttle opens, it is apparant at idle. I'm suspecting perhaps the alternator. It sounds like I have a supercharger. I have good oil pressure and all, and the engine seems to run very well with no knocking sounds, power problems, or overheating. Would it be ok from dead cold to start the engine without the fan/alternator belt for just 5 seconds to see if the sound is absent? I know the 911 basically needs that fan or else the engine will literally die; however, if dead cold tomorrow morning (5C or less) can I run it without the belt for a few seconds or will that result in damage? thanks in advance. -Tom

Maybe try and spin the alt/cooling fan with your hand or wrap a piece of cord around the pulley and pull it to try and duplicate the noise with the motor off first. Just a thought?

+1 remove belts one at a time to eliminate alternator/fan belt being to tight or vevn pulley rubbing against the fan housing. if you have ac, eliminate the compressor.
do not let it run for a long time battery will drain and worse she will over heat.

Thanks guys!
No a/c and air pump was removed by PO, so just one belt. I will just run it for a few seconds without the belt then. I should mention I did change the belt back in November before a long trip to California and back. I originally did install it to tight at the fan blades were touching the fan housing, but then I loosened it a bit and all seemed well. Last edited by woywitka; 03-22-2013 at 10:22 AM.. |

you should be able to start it and run at idle for quite a while . a few minutes for sure before the temp even begins to move .

lol.
Thanks for the help guys. It is most certainly an issue with the alternator, car sounds great with the belt off, and when I spin the fan/alt by hand there is some crunching sounds. Time to send the alternator off for a rebuild. -Tom

it might just need repacking of grease, just use a pin tool, remove plastic cover and pack some bearing grease in there. if it still whines, then send it off, check regulator while you at it.
