Remove rear wing

I have just purchased a 1987 Targa, for a good friends wife, so she can give it to him as a surprise birthday gift. They used to own a 73.
My question is can I remove the rear wing and just put rubber plugs/buttons in the holes, if any? Or sell this lid and purchase a plain deck lid and have it repainted?

You could plug the holes but I think it would detract from the good looks of the car.

If it were me, I would sell the decklid/tail combo and get a nice used plain deck and have it painted to match.

If you take off the tail then you should take off the chin spoiler.

You really can't use plugs to fill the holes. Well, you can, but it always looks terrible.

Check the PP classifieds, there are usually decklids for sale in the $100-$200 range.

Also, you are fine removing the rear spoiler, but keeping that little rubber chin spoiler.

Remember there is no grille on the decklid underneath the spoiler. I did this to my black 85 carrera as a temporary solution until i found a flat decklid. I used motorcycle number plate vinyl to cover the holes.

Not true. Should not have tail without chin spoiler.

Chin without tail is ok.

Paul Frere wrote either both spoilers or none. I have to agree with him. I think that the car looks better without spoilers. But at high speed, with no spoilers I can feel the car move around, adds the fun!

I'll have a spare rear decklid available by next weekend if you're interested.

My only preference is if it came with the spoilers I would keep them, I wouldn't take them off, I got to really like mine. If I bought one without I wouldn't add them. I wouldn't change the car.

The issue is that the wife remembers her 73 and it had no spoilers. That is what I am trying to replicate. Also on the 964 the rear spoiler became retractable, because Porsche, I am told, was advised that customers liked the purer look. Also I was unable to find a car that met my requirements without spoilers. I did look, but there are a lot of projects out there, which is not what I was looking for. This is a low mileage car for low $$ and nice colour combination, blue with light grey interior. Not a fan of red with black!

I think Targas look much better without a rear spoiler.

Paul Frere wrote that way before the factory started to equip the 84-89 Carreras with the front lip and no rear. Leave the front on, it reduces the undercar turbulance, aiding front-end stability and fuel economy. Bill K

I removed mine and like the more streamlined look. Mine was poorly attached and was looking for the correct hardware when I decided to go tailless. My front spoiler looks correctly installed but the rear spoiler was added. I'm waiting on my COA for any clues.
The engine lid had the 911SC emblem holes under the spoiler and not correctly drilled holes so I am sure it was an add on. I live in the mountains so the benefits of having the wing is limited.

I know it has been discussed in the past but having a chin spoiler only and the rear oriented weight should be ok for street and twisty roads right??

I'll wait to go to Hershey for a replacement lid unless I find one locally here in N.Y. or next month in N.C.

Terry
