Loud Pop

Hello everyone,

I need help!

When driving at a low rate of speed approx. 5mph and turn the wheel to the left, I hear a loud pop. It is not a clicking sound or it does not make multiple popping sounds it is just one pop every time. It sounds like it is coming from the front driver side but not definitly sure. Has anyone experience this or know what it could be? Any and all responses are greatly appreciated.

So, to replace the wheel bearings do I have to do both front wheels and howdifficult is it to replace them? Do I need any special tools? Sorry for these dumb questions, but my knowledge of these things are limited.

Thank you

This may not be your issue but I had a similar problem recently. When making a left turn followed by a right turn, I would hear a 'pop' sound. I could swear that from sitting in the driver's seat that it was coming from the right front area of the car, obviously from changes in the suspension/load while turning. I could duplicate it nearly every time.

Turns out that it was the right rear sway bar drop link that was loose. Tightened it up, 'pop' all gone.

i had this happen as well, it was my steering wheel bearing, the bearing on the lower half of the shaft, to get to it i went through the smugglers box.

not terrible.
when i started it i went about it all wrong(looked in all the wrong places, etc)

just takes some working to get it to come out. if i remember correctly you might have to remove the lower U joint to get the bearing removed. you'll see when you look in there. - the bearing is in a shaft that sticks up from the bottom front of the smugglers box. - if i had known then what i know now it probably would be an hour tops. cant remember if i bought the new bearing from here or from somewhere else but it was in the range of $50.

when i popped the bearing out it fell apart - - totally rusted. after the pop it was near impossible to make a turn.

Well I replaced the wheel bearings, sway bar tightend, and I still have that popping sound problem. I was told that it was my steering rack, there was some play and pop coming from the driver's side. Does anyone know of a place here in the southbay area who can rebuild it?

Thanks,

Jinkatin - Please stop trying to fix it by listening to people throwing out wild guesses here and bring it to someone trusted in your area before you go flying off the highway. You replaced the wheel bearings? Why? How do you "tighten" a sway bar?

Yeah, I know but the the bearing needed to be replaced. About the sway bar I meant all bolts are tight. I'm taking the car in to the mechanics' tomorrow morning, and have him figure it out.

Thanks gary,

Sorry for the delayed response but I finally found out what was causing the popping sound, It was my right strut.

First, glad you found the problem.

Second, glad you took the time to post the cause/cure! It's very frustrating when we never know which, if any, of suggested remedies is the correct one. Your simple posting will, no doubt, help guide others who have a mysterious "pop" when turning.

I had a loud pop when I turned and it turned out to be a broken mount on the rear swaybars. Get your flashlight and look around.

Uh, he found the problem: the strut (bearings, I assume).

The big three of noises when determined from the rear end.....most common to least.

Sway bar bushing/broken mount. Popping, sighing, grinding.

CV joint, clicking on turns, grinding, thumping and in bad cases....no power to wheels.

Wheel bearing, whirring noise going up and down with wheel speed. Grinding and a squeel....

It was the spindle on the strut. Anytime I turned the hub would slip out and make that popping sound.
