Question Targa Bar Script

Hi,

I'm restoring my targa bar soon, and was wondering what the correct colour is for the 'targa' script that clips on each side?

Mine are black at the moment, but I believe the correct colour is silver?

Anyone know for sure?

Cheers,

Tim.

On my 73.5 T Targa the targa scriot is silver... but also is the Targa bar..

Don't know per sure for your 83 but I will guess (probably wrong) that will be black as the taga bar.

Hope this helps

On the other hand I just saw the pictures of the Targa from BigBpainta and the lettering is silver...

I told you I was going to be wrong...

I'm in the same boat Jordi,
I've never really quite figured this one out... my bar on my '79 is black...the script is silver... when I pulled them off for cleaning, the back sides were black...looked anodized. I thought maybe the finish had just worn off so I painted 'em black. When I put them on, I didn't like the look so I pulled them back off and removed the paint. I polished them up a bit and like them much better.

....no shortage of the word "them" in this post!

Has anyone got any pictures from an original brochure or something?

I know it may seem a small thing to be worried about but I want to keep my car as original as possible!

Cheers,

Tim

Looking at the 911 Road Cars book, page 71, Red 964, black bar, silver script.. page 70, 1976 and 1990 black bar and black script (B&W picture).. page 61 1986 Turbo, black bar, black script (B&W picture)

So unless someone else has a 'final' answer my guess is that, following Leland's experience, you should painted in any color you like.

I know.. not very helpful.. but I tried...

to further muddle the discussion, our host sells the following targ bar emblems:

Targa' Gold, on Targa Bar (1967-71) A-559-307-40

'Targa' Black, on Targa Bar (1972-89) C-559-307-41

go figure.
FWIW, mine is silver now, but I will be redoing my targa bar and will switch to black.

Also in the FWIW category..

Mine's Silver on black bar. Know for a fact it's not been redone.

BTW, I have a 1980 Silver targa SC.

I say, paint it whatever you want it to be & enjoy!

FWIW, silver script on a black '88 Targa here. Looks good but this thread has me thinking about changing the color (maybe red to match the calipers?).

my understanding is that they are held on by adhesive and I remember reading a thread that the way to remove them is with dental floss (you do floss every day don't you?)

Hi all,

Thought I would chime in on this one. I have an '85 Targa. Black Targa band with silver script. Just repainted it the same. Looks great.

regards,

My 85 has a black bar and black script. The factory brochure for 1985, which is in color, also shows a black bar and black script. I believe the older targas had a silver script with either a silver or black bar. I know I see several 80s models around with either black or silver script. I just assumed they painted or polished the lettering. Someone with an SC brochure needs to chime in for a definitive answer.

My 78SC came with the black trim option and has the black script on black bar. However, for 78 and I think 79, the black out trim was an option. That would mean only those cars with the black out trim option available would also have the black script. Otherwise it would be silver on the 79 or older models. Targas 80 and newer would have the black script as a matter of course.

I can't speak for all years, but on my '79 to remove them you must do the following.

First remove the rear targa bar weatherstripping. Then unscrew the multitude of philips head screws that are under the weatherstripping...
Then jack the car up and remove the rear wheels...
Up in the quarterpanels, you will see two nuts at the base of the targa bar....undo those on each side and the bar cover itself should come free. Just lift it off.
Now you can access the "Targa" script from behind. Mine had no adhesive...just those same little nut/washers that hold the SC and hood badging in place.

Hope this helps,

Leland

Leland, you mentioned that your targa bar is black, can you tell me what type of material is under the black paint,I see all these targas with black bars and assumed that they are not stock but have been painted. The reason I ask this question is that my bar is stainless steel and looks factory,Is it only the SC's that came with painted bars? Are they stainless underneith the paint?I am just curious why and when Porsche started painting their targa bars.thanks

Someone will surely correct me...
If only I had my "911 Guide to Authenticity" over here with me...

The polished bar and the Black bar were both factory options... I want to say you could still get the chrome trim option until like 1981 or so.
I'd say your bar is pure factory... Which means most of the other trim is chrome as well.
The black bars are in fact painted.
This was just discussed a week ago or so. I believe it is a Wurth Satin finish.
And i can tell you... it's hard as hell!

Someone will chime in on the factory option specifics... i'd just lie to you, so I won't even bother.
