Cone air filter on CIS
I will be picking up my new (to me) 1980 Euro SC on monday... I can't wait! It is an absolutely gorgeous car... I hope my garage is "worthy" I am curious if the 3.0L with CIS can be fitted with a K&N type cone filter. I know this is a problem on certain VW cars with similar injection. I will not be totally defecting from the 914 BBS because my wife insists on driving it... but it seems I have spent more time on this board as of late... so I decided: If you can't beat em', join em'. I have not come to the decision about joining the SCWDP though... *grin* You guys have been alot of help in my decision to jump into 911 land with both feet. You will probably see lots of queries from me in the future! Thanks, Brian

If you check out pictures from supercharging applications, such as SOK, you will see a cone filter mounted on a plate that covers the stock filter location.
Personally, I see no gain in doing this. Maybe asthetics if you want a racy look, but no performance gains.

That was going to be my second question....is there any gain to doing the conversion? I figured it would at least clean up the engine bay a little. I have seen posts where people claim that they have drilled holes in their airbox... what is the gain from this, and is it practical for daily use? Brian

Most people around here will tell you that the air filter is not the bottle neck on the CIS system...you could take the filter off and not see any improvement.
I believe Bruce Anderson addressed this in his book. That being said, K&N air filters allow umpteen times more dirt and particles to get through and into your injection system. CIS systems like clean fuel. You take those two facts and what you get is a bad situation. Especially for someone like me who lives in a virtual dust bowl. I'd stick with the factory filter. Personal opinion. ![]() Welcome to SC ownership... I trust you will come around to the WDP???? ![]()

I will re-read that section in the book... I guess I could have probably answered my own question! I suppose that by just OWNING an SC I am inadvertently contibuting to the plot... *grin* Brian

This is for a 3.2L but you might find the difference between a cone filter and stock airbox with K&N interesting. (Cone filter=3HP loss).

I had a cone filter on my 3.2 for an afternoon before I shipped it back for a refund. My butt test indicated from a loss of power on the low end to absolutely no improvement at all. It did, however, sounded real cooool. I ended up with just the K&N element with holes in the airbox. This setup actually improved 3rd and 4th gear acceleration while not affecting the others. This is, of course, according to my very unscientific butt test. Come to think of it, since it's such a nice day out today, I 'll go out and calibrate my butt
