Relocating DME ECU Computer - alternative locations?

Hi -

I'm doing a 3.6L conversion and am looking for an alternative location (other then under the driver's seat) to mount the 964 DME ECU Computer in my '74 911. My seats are lowered - I chopped out the OEM mount rails and welded in new cross bars - so there's not enough room under them anymore. I've thought about the floor just behind the driver's seat, the rear seat well behind the driver's seat and the firewall above the rear seat. I'd love to hear about some alternative locations and see photos if possible of what others have done.

Thanks,
Tom

I have seen 964 Cup cars with the DME installed on the vertical panel behind the drivers seat. This is the section between the bottom of the rear seat and the main floor.

The seat in my 87 is lowered so the rear portion is below the seat rails so the DME wouldn't fit. I moved it so it is in front of the DME relay and the altitude compensator. The plug is on the left side toward the door. Didn't have to change the harness at all. It pokes out a bit in front of the seat but you can't get your foot on it to step on it.

Loosen it up and push it over there and see if you like the location.

Big issue is slack in the harness.......or lack thereof.

This is one of the panels I was thinking of. Where does the harness typically pass through the firewall? At the top near the rear cross member or down lower? Looking at the harness I have, it looks like the grommet is towards the engine side - which might indicate that it passed through the firewall higher, rather than lower and then ran under the carpet down the inside? It looks like I'll need to cut a pretty big hole to pass the connector through. I haven't measured the grommet yet, but it looks big!

Thanks for the ideas,

Tom

Here's where mine goes through, drivers side. This is the same spot where the 964/993 go though

Cups mount them either on a vertical panel behing the seat or horizontally behind the seat.

vertical, mostly used w/o air jacks

horizontal, mostly used w/ air jacks

Here are a couple of pictures that may be of some help.

The aluminum plate was used to mount the DME on the race cars.

I deleted the rear seat because it's all rusted out and install it in that area.
