ARGGH, Speedo Odometer not working

OK, I've piggybacked this issue on a couple of other threads but decided to create it's own since I'm really running into frustrating issues.
In a nutshell, about 2 weeks ago noticed speedo jumped 100k miles. I'd fixed the broken gear about 6 months ago and speedo had worked perfectly.
Took it out to see if I could fix it and was able to move the odo back to 177,xxx miles and put it back.
Then noticed speedo and odo dead...assumed I'd somehow screwed it up by removing it so finally sent it off to Overseas Speedometer in Austin. Nice guy and promptly put it on the test bench and it worked perfectly and he tested it for about 350 miles and sent it back.
Went to plan B based on others suggestion and focused on the sensor although it seemed odd that the sensor would fail at the same time I was messing around with the speedo. Anyway, it seemed to not be working and ordered new one from Pelican. The new one seems to work out of the car since I can get it to test OK with a multimeter for continuity with a magnet. I could not get the old one to test like this. Put new one in and...STILL DEAD SPEEDO/ODO. I do get power to lights and can find 12v on the red wire.
What the he!! could be wrong? What is odd is that the new sensor seemed to not fit snugly in the hole on the tranny but the little tab holds it solidly in hole so I don't know if that's an issue. I also tried to test it again now that it's in the car and can't get it to trigger the VM continuity test when I hook it up to the 2 leads in the back floor access port and spin the wheel. Could whatever triggers the sensor inside the tranny be broken? Seems highly unlikely.
Any suggestions welcome since this is keeping me from getting the inspection and I've already had a ticket for that from a very diligent officer of the law...

Mark the wiring and send it to Palo Alto or North Hollywood Speedometer. Make your life easier....

Thanks but I sent it to a speedo guy in Austin and it worked flawlessly on his test bench. Are you saying the test was misleading in some way?
Thanks for the reply.

make sure you don't have the new sender mounted upside down!

it's easy to do, b/c it looks "correct" mounted upside down, and looks a little weird mounted the correct way.

If you are not getting a signal for the new sensor then the speedo will not work.

Make sure the sensor fits properly as stated above. if that does not work call pelicans found out why the new sensor does not fit properly.

FWIW, I recently sent out my Speedometer to North Hollywood Speedometer. They repaired the odometer and calibrated my speedometer and their turnaround time was fairly quick.

When I put it back in it worked perfectly and I checked the speed with a GPS and can attest that it is accurate to at least 100mph.

I would recommend them.

I 've sent my speedo to Overseas Speedometer and Rick, the owner, has a stellar
reputation, great work and quick turnaround.Been in this business for many many years!
I'd look elsewhere,possibly sensor.
It's a shame you don't have access to another car to put the speedo in...I'm 5 hours away but I'd do for you
if I was a bit closer

+1 on NHS. I just sent mine to them last month based on recommendations here. Shipped it on Monday, arrived on Wednesday, they shipped it back to me on Friday. Awesome service.

Thx for replies, I'm going to do more testing on sensor after work tonight. The sensor "looks" like it only goes one way since there is a cutout that I thought senses the magnets. I plan to confirm the sensor is closing while the wheel spins.

Update...sort of. On way to cars n coffee this am (unfortunately could not get in...too crowded) the speedo/odo started to barely work at about 3,000 rpms in 5th (75 mph?) on the highway. Below this it would drop to 0 and sort of bounce around a bit.
I know this is telling me something but I don't know what...any suggestions?
Oddly enough I also noticed the upshift light blinked on a handful of time when I was in 5th gear. It's not supposed to display in 5th gear...
edit: when it does work it only shows about 40 mph but I was actually traveling about 75 mph.
Any Dallas guys get to cars n coffee this a.m.? I'm going to have to get up there early next month.
