Crankfire Ignition; Trigger wheel/pulley clearance?

Has anyone had to trim the bottom of the their fan hhousing for clearance in installing a crank pulley/trigger wheel for crank-fire ignition?

Just about to mount-up the crank pulley w/trigger wheel.. seems awfully close, like bottom of fan housing needs to be trimmed. Anyone else had to do this?

Engine is 3.2 / 3.3

Thanks,

Who's wheel are you using? I had no problem with mine.

Not sure who the pulley is by.. trigger wheel may be Clewett.

Unit was previoulsy used on a 930 with a/c.. decided to go with this one as I've considered putting a/c back in my car.

Will re-check fitment I guess and go from there..

60-2 trigger..

So you're having clearance with the mounting bracket for the timing sensor or the pulley is too close to the fan?

I had to remove about 1/2-inch of material on my engine console mount to accommodate the Clewett sensor. Plus, at first I thought that I had the wrong Clewett pulley. It was a really tight fit. So tight, that the magnetic teeth actually touched my fan housing. I had to file about 1-2 mm off the back my fan housing just to feel comfortable with the installation. Richard Clewett tells me that 1 in 30 may have to remove some material. I guess it all depends on the fan housing casting.

Details can be found on the referenced thread.

I've got the clewett pulley on my electromotive equipped 930. I had to carefully set the fore-aft position of the fan housing (there is some wiggle room) to clear the pulley properly. On mine, the bottom lip of the fan housing actually protrudes down into the space between the trigger wheel and the pulley. There isn't a lot of clearance, but there is no interference. Been running this now for +4k miles

I think you can get a sense of what I mean from this photo:

KTL, thanks for the link but I've been all over that one..

Trog, Been following your thread too.. thought it was the case issue at forst but its not.. Thanls for the input on the fan housing.. makes sense

Jacob, How you doing man?
- Didn't know you had moved to one of these. From your pic, it looks like you're using and a/c pulley as well.. closer pic maybe?

- Think that pic is representative of my issue.. just wasn't sure if about the "wiggle room" or if this was normal fitment as you've described.

Out of curiosity, where did you guys mount your coils?

Thx again for everyones input.. I'll post back on how things work-out.

I've seen the coils mounted a number of ways:

-On the firewall between the shock towers. That's where my single plug board is installed. I'm not real fond of it (I didn't put it there myself) as its a PITA to get the cover plate removed to adjust the dials (I have the old HPV-1 silver/gold coil board)

-Inside the cabin on the rear seat back area. I like this idea for easy access to them, but I suspect it's PITA to tune on the engine and have to climb in & out of the cabin to get to the boards

-On top of the shock tower, between the tops of the shocks.

-A friend has his twin plug boards mounted between the carbs in the center of the engine, on an alloy stand/tray that he custom made.

Which crankfire setup do you have by the way? HPV-# or HPX, TEC, or XDi?

KTL,

Like you.. I've seen them mounted most of the ways you've mentioned. Even had one myself that was mounted between the carbs.

- This one was previously mounted on the firewall between the shock towers as many are.

- Since its going on a Turbo this time I was just fishing for other ideas as its a real getting at with the CIS and the intercooler in place. I was actually kinda eyeballing around to see what kinda brackets I could come-up with to make a cleaner/easier mount.

- I too have the old HPV-1 silver/gold coil board.. simple, easy.. does the job.

I don't have any better pics of the pulley area handy. You can see in that photo how the trigger wheel sits behind the fan housing lip, and the rest of the crank pulley is in front. Yes, that's the dual row A/C pulley from Clewett. My A/C is inoperative, but my plan is to make it work someday.

I mounted my coils on the fire wall. I don't need to access them for timing adjustment since I have the XDI2 system. The XDI2 box is mounted underneath the passenger seat and I just plug in the laptop to adjust the timing map.

That's pretty much how mine sits.. its just that it looks a little weird going in, coupled with the "wiggle room" mentioned earlier.. so I may be ok.

My only reason for using this particular pulley is A). It was on another turbo set-up I had, and B). the same as you with the thought of reloading the a/c system to the car someday.

Somehow I kinda figure they'll end-up on the firewall too..

I had to grind off some material from my Vtex housing to fit both my GSF 36-1 and Clewett 60-2 wheels. I didn't have any issue with the stock fan housing.

Trog.

That's a very nice set-up.. however it won't even come close to woking for a turbo w/twin plug. No room with CIS and intercooler.

Nice work though!
