Strange engine #
I'm very confused by the engine # in the picture below. 1082001 is a very odd number for a 1977 930 engine.
Can someone help? Thanks, ![]()

K Series Aug 76 - Jul 77
Type 930/53 fitted to US Turbo The # seem odd as it should be 6870001 + ??? for 108 but the serial is probably 2001 The stamp in front of the number look like PS. Someone will crack this code

Since there are no stars, this would not be a production installed case stamping.
Also , take a photo that shows the stamped digits better . They do not look like production stamp tools for that year either , But I would have to see then better to know for certain. Last edited by RatBox; 04-10-2011 at 11:32 AM.. |

Unfortunately , it's usually not that easy. IF.... it is a porsche stamping (away from production engine buiding stations). Letters similar to this usually are abbreviations for a DE word / or words.
Spare / Ersatzteil Special does start with an S in DE however / Sonder or Spezial The normally used/seen stampings for Factory built (or built in Porsche Facilities in other countries) replacement motors are AT , and KD. And the following stampings are usually similar to the motor they are replacing. I did find a blurb about how 911 Carrera 3.2 CS's have 'SP' stamped into the cases. But I do not know where the stamping is. And if this truly is a fact. Or if a fact , what SP stands for. Last edited by RatBox; 04-10-2011 at 01:56 PM.. |

If you looked at as a date and a product number.
Years ago I had heard that some builders would emboss with their number on a rebuild. Possibly the builders initials build date and sequence number. Just a thought Bruce |

The numbers appears to be original from the factory, there are no signs of sanding or grinding the engine case to apply a different number (post assembly ).
The engine does have the engine type (930/53) which is correct for this model year. I would like to sort this out before disassembling the engine for the rebuild. Thanks,

If you would like any more help from me. I have to see the stamped numeral digits better. And i'm curious , do you think this kind of info. just gets handed to you on a platter ?
Porsche used many Font stamping tools over the years . And reused them depending on who and where in the factory the stamping was done. |
