Air Injection System

This may be a dumb question, but I'm new to Porsche. What is the Air Injection System? I have a 1977 2.7 (No booing please) and I don't recall seeing it mounted on the front of the engine. Is this part of the emissions system? Can the engine run with out it?

Yes it is part of the emission setup. It includes an air pump mounted to the left of the distributer, driven off the fan pulley. The air is injected into the exhaust ports through a manifold called the "air rail" or horse shoe.

If you don't see it, it may have been removed. Many have been taken off because the car runs cooler and better without it.

It is this part of the emissions system. And, the engine can run with out it.
It's purpose is/was to pump extra air (02) in to the exhaust to help burn any extra HC's befor they leave the tail pipe.

To be more specific, the air injection was put on in 1977 so the car would pass the federal test standards. A car is pre-conditioned in a particular temperature building for 24 hours, then the gas tank in filled with endaline(federal test gas)then the car is pushed into a plastic bag and the gas tank is warmed-up and the hydrocarbons are measured. Then the car is pushed to a chassis dyno and the tailpipe is connected up for a full sampleing of the emissions. This is where the air injection comes in. During the start-up period the air injection is used only in the first bag of emissions. The car warms up and a thermo-time limit switch opens up a diverter valve so that the injection of fresh air is not needed once the car is warm. So once the car is warm, the air injection does nothing!!! In the federal testing standards they measure particulates per mile, nox, co, and hc. OTTO
