Kendall 80W90 gear oil question - did a search.

I can get the Kendall product through the mail, or, I can go to Autozone and get Valvoline 80W90 or Castrol 80W90 (both mineral). Is this stuff the same or is there something special about Kendall that makes it worth me paying shipping.

Thanks all.

Ray

Howdy,

Assuming this is for your 915 tranny. You need to use Swepco. The 901 uses Porsche Synchromesh. The synchros need a little friction to work. Anything synthetic will likely be too slick and cause the synchros not to work properly. I don't know if the one you're asking about is synthetic or what but Swepco has an excellent reputation and has been used by many on this board with good effect.

Kendall seems to be the Brad Penn of tranny oil now, have not heard of using castrol but maybe someone else will chime in.

I wish some people would just read the post and provide the answer to the question asked if they have anything intelligent to submit.

Probably no "real/significant" difference, just check the ratings and specs. carefully vs what is recommended in your manual. 915 tranny vs. G50's, etc.

Used the Kendall stuff in my close ratio 915 at races last season and it performed just fine. Shifted great and never crunched a gear (which was not driver error..... ) every time out regardless of temperatures. I think its good stuff. Certainly plenty capable for a street car.

That said, i'll be switching to something more robust for racing. I didn't have any problems per se' with the Kendall but i'd like to get some more protection against wear, especially since I don't yet have a trans cooler installed which is on next year's list of to-dos. I'm going with a 75W140 oil and i'll not start the debate by refraining from which brand i'm going to use.

Id say its Swepco or Kendall and none of the others. There has been quite a bit of discussion on this here.

Perhaps you should read the OP post again and then your response. Maybe you'll see why the response was made.

"I can get the Kendall product through the mail, or, I can go to Autozone and get Valvoline 80W90 or Castrol 80W90 (both mineral). "

Re: 3 star, I believe this is re-labeled for Pelicans. Peter Zimmerman can better chime in on this.
