SSI headers (3.6 type) for 91' 964 engine
Experiencing a fitting issue with the SSI heat exchanger (right) and the engine. Apparently, the right chain adjuster lid protruding under the right chain case does not allow the right SSI heat exchanger to lower to the exhaust ports. Has anyone experienced this or similar with an after market exhaust system? Doing a 3.6 conversion and went with the smaller primary exhaust system by SSI. I chose the 3.6 liter type system for earlier chassis (1974). When i attempt to mount the H.E. the chain adjuster lid hits the H.E. not allowing it to fully mount to the exhaust ports. Do i need some kind of conversion part here? I have searched for some type of block or cap that either Timmins or PMP would carry to allow more clearance... but found nothing.

we carefully cut a slice out of the heater duct, where it hits the tensioner. Then cut a piece of matching stainless sheet, bent to fit, and tig in place

How much of a clearance issue is there. If it is only a fraction of an inch then I would try to bang on the heat exchanger and indent the area to make it fit.
Else, you would need some sort of spacer but I am not aware of an off-the-shelf item for that purpose. Cheers, Ingo

Thank you very much for the ideas. Since my welding supplies are at nil and my hammer collection is quite complete. Well I think I can use a circular piece of strong steel to keep the heater duct opening intact (circular) and use one of my bfh's on it. It seems to be a 2 or 2.5 inch depth i require. Thanks again and no worries on the pattern Dave (clean/pro idea tho).

We "dimpled" this area with a large ball pein hammer. A local speed shop that uses them all the time have a fixture on a hyd press and does it in this manner. Its not just a small "dimple" and needs to be worked with quite a bit to make it fit the 3.6 engine.
I have used the SSI's on my 3.6 conversion (its Bill V's old engine) and like them but after talking with several people who have done this am leaning towards putting larger primary HE's on the car.
